Fotografia modowa kobiet w intermedialnym polu. Analiza wybranych

dzieł Sarah Moon i Deborah Turbeville

dc.abstract.enThis work addresses the subject of fashion photography practised by women, based on the example of Sarah Moon's and Deborah Turbeville's artistic output. While being creatively active during the 1970s, they were pioneers of feminist fashion photography, thereby transforming the medium. In order to determine the specificity of the photographers' artistic strategy, their oeuvre has been examined in terms of the concept of intermediality, understood as incorporation of art forms such as painting, literature or film into photography. In this study, the concept is also interpreted as crossing the border of aesthetic dimension of an image, toward an approach oriented around the performative nature of the relationship between female-photographer and female-model, while simultaneously breaking away from the canon of the so-called male gaze. The active aspect of photographic process was based on Richard Shusterman's publication Photography as Performative Process and the unique philosophy regarding the final result, which was proposed by the author. The argumentation also takes into account Susan Sontag's definition of photography (On Photography), which revolves around the themes of aggression and objectification. The concept of female gaze was also included in this study, as it confronts the so-called male gaze and enables redefinition of the representation of women. The thesis does not aim to establish Sarah Moon and Deborah Turbeville as intermedial artists, but rather to signal such elements within their photographic work.
dc.abstract.plPraca obejmuje zagadnienie fotografii mody uprawianej przez kobiety, oparte na przykładzie twórczości Sarah Moon i Deborah Turbeville. Działając w latach siedemdziesiątych XX wieku, były one prekursorkami feministycznej fotografii modowej, tym samym zmieniając oblicze medium. W celu określenia specyfiki strategii artystycznej fotografek, ich dorobek został rozpatrzony pod względem zagadnienia intermedialności, rozumianej poprzez wplatanie w fotografię innych form sztuki, takich jak malarstwo, literatura czy film. Termin interpretowany jest w pracy również jako wykraczanie poza estetyczny wymiar obrazu, w kierunku zorientowanym wokół performatywnego charakteru relacji pomiędzy fotografką a modelką, przy jednoczesnym wyłamaniu się z kanonu tzw. „male gaze”. Aktywny element procesu robienia zdjęć oparty został na publikacji ,,Fotografia jako proces performatywny Richarda Shustermana i unikalnej filozofii myślenia o końcowym efekcie, jaką proponuje autor. W argumentacji uwzględniono także definicję fotografii według Susan Sontag (,,O fotografii), oscylującą wokół tematyki agresji i uprzedmiotowienia. Do toku rozważań włączone zostało pojęcie „female gaze”, konfrontujące się z tzw. męskim spojrzeniem oraz umożliwiające przedefiniowanie przedstawienia kobiety. Praca nie ma na celu konstytuowania Sarah Moon i Deborah Turbeville jako twórczyń intermedialnych, natomiast zasygnalizowanie takich wątków w ich dorobku fotograficznym.
