The Linguistic and Rhetorical Battle between Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak – BBC Prime Ministerial Debate 2024

dc.abstract.en	The primary focus of this paper is on linguistic techniques, rhetorical strategies and rhetorical devices chosen by English-speaking politicians in the course of election campaigns during televised political debates. Since the beginnings of democracy, verbal communication has constituted a battlefield for political opponents who struggle for gaining power in the state. Research on rhetorical and linguistic techniques appearing in political communication with the persuasive aim is of significant importance due to its real impact on shaping public opinion, and therefore decisions of potential voters. This paper concentrates on rhetorical and linguistic analysis of speeches conducted by Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak during the Prime Ministerial Debate, presented by the BBC on the 4th of July 2024. Chapter 1 is dedicated to theory concerning communication, political discourse, rhetoric and overviews of political candidates, political parties that the competing rivals represent and the Election Campaign 2024 in the United Kingdom. Chapter 2 includes the practical part and deals with analysis of rhetorical strategies and rhetorical devices as well as linguistic techniques with the usage of both the quantitative and qualitative method. The research shows that representatives of the main British political parties participating in the debate choose different rhetorical and linguistic strategies. Concurrently, the present author points out similarities found in the speeches of politicians. The conducted study constitutes a supplement to interdisciplinary analysis of British political discourse that appeared due to the Election Campaign 2024 and may serve as a foundation to further research that focus on comparing rhetorical and linguistic tendencies in the time of political polarisation.
dc.abstract.pl	Obszarem zainteresowania poniższej pracy są techniki językowe oraz strategie i środki retoryczne wybierane przez anglojęzycznych polityków podczas kampanii wyborczych w trakcie debat politycznych transmitowanych w telewizji. Od początków demokracji to właśnie komunikacja werbalna stanowi pole bitwy polityków przeciwstawnych opcji ubiegających się o władzę w państwie. Badanie technik retorycznych oraz lingwistycznych występujących w komunikacji politycznej używanej w celach perswazyjnych jest niezwykle ważne ze względu na ich realny wpływ na kształtowanie opinii publicznej, a co za tym idzie decyzji potencjalnych wyborców. Praca ta skupia się na retorycznej oraz lingwistycznej analizie wypowiedzi pojawiających się w trakcie debaty kandydatów na premierów Zjednoczonego Królestwa, Keira Starmera oraz Rishiego Sunaka, prezentowanej przez BBC 4 lipca 2024 roku. Rozdział pierwszy pracy poświęcony jest teorii dotyczącej komunikacji, dyskursu politycznego, retoryki oraz szkiców politycznych kandydatów, partii politycznych, do których przynależą rywalizujący oponenci oraz kampanii wyborczej 2024 w Zjednoczonym Królestwie. Z kolei drugi rozdział zawiera część praktyczną i skupiony jest na analizie strategii oraz środków retorycznych, a także strategii lingwistycznych z wykorzystaniem zarówno metody ilościowej, jak i jakościowej. Badanie pokazuje, że biorący udział w debacie przedstawiciele głównych brytyjskich partii politycznych wybierają różne strategie retoryczne oraz lingwistyczne. Jednocześnie autor pracy zwraca uwagę na znalezione podobieństwa w wypowiedziach polityków. Przeprowadzone badanie stanowi uzupełnienie interdyscyplinarnych analiz brytyjskiego dyskursu politycznego powstałych w związku z kampanią wyborczą 2024 i może posłużyć jako fundament pod dalsze badania skupiające się na porównaniu tendencji retorycznych oraz lingwistycznych w czasach polaryzacji politycznej.
