Multimodal expressions of complex emotions. A cognitive study of images illustrating divorce

dc.abstract.en	This thesis explores how complex emotions related to divorce are conveyed through multimodal visual representations. Grounded in cognitive linguistics, the research draws heavily on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), which posits that people understand abstract concepts - such as emotions - through more concrete experiences. The thesis also incorporates multimodal discourse analysis and the theory of embodiment, which together allow for a nuanced examination of how visual imagery, layout, color, framing, and other symbolic elements work in tandem to convey emotional meanings. All these conceptual tools enable individuals to make sense of complex feelings by mapping them onto more familiar physical domains such as objects, containers, paths, or forces. The study analyzes how emotional experiences, particularly, love, and happiness are structured and communicated through metaphor, metonymy, and image schemas and if such examples are expected in the context of divorce. As data sources, I picked images used in the online articles that depict emotional states related to divorce, paying special attention to the positive ones. To further understand how such visual metaphors are interpreted, the thesis includes a survey component, capturing insights from diverse participants. This empirical dimension explores individual differences in emotional framing, revealing how personal experiences, and visual literacy can shape the perception and interpretation of visual metaphors. Half of the participants were asked to evaluate monomodal (purely visual) and multimodal (combined verbal-visual) representations, allowing for a comparative analysis of how different modes influence emotional resonance and conceptual clarity.
dc.abstract.pl	Ta praca bada, w jaki sposób złożone emocje związane z rozwodem są przekazywane za pomocą multimodalnych reprezentacji wizualnych. Oparte na lingwistyce kognitywnej badania w dużej mierze opierają się na teorii metafory pojęciowej (CMT), która zakłada, że ludzie rozumieją abstrakcyjne koncepcje - takie jak emocje - poprzez bardziej konkretne doświadczenia. Praca obejmuje również multimodalną analizę dyskursu i teorię ucieleśnienia, które razem pozwalają na zniuansowane badanie tego, w jaki sposób obrazy wizualne, układ, kolor, kadrowanie i inne elementy symboliczne współdziałają, aby przekazać znaczenia emocjonalne. Wszystkie te narzędzia pojęciowe umożliwiają jednostkom nadawanie sensu złożonym uczuciom poprzez mapowanie ich na bardziej znane domeny fizyczne, takie jak obiekty, pojemniki, ścieżki lub siły. Badanie analizuje, w jaki sposób doświadczenia emocjonalne, w szczególności miłość i szczęście, są strukturyzowane i przekazywane za pomocą metafor, metonimii i schematów obrazów, i czy spodziewamy się ich obecności w kontekście rozwodu. Jako źródła danych wybrałam obrazy używane w artykułach internetowych, które przedstawiają stany emocjonalne związane z rozwodem, zwracając szczególną uwagę na te pozytywne. Aby lepiej zrozumieć, w jaki sposób takie metafory wizualne są interpretowane, praca zawiera komponent ankiety, rejestrujący spostrzeżenia od różnych uczestników. Ten empiryczny wymiar bada indywidualne różnice w emocjonalnym ujęciu, ujawniając, jak osobiste doświadczenia i znajomość języka wizualnego mogą kształtować percepcję i interpretację metafor wizualnych. Jedna połowa uczestników została poproszona o ocenę monomodalnych (czysto wizualnych) reprezentacji, tymczasem druga pracowała z multimodalnymi (połączonymi werbalnowizualnymi) materiałami, co umożliwiło analizę porównawczą tego, jak różne tryby wpływają na rezonans emocjonalny i jasność konceptualną.
