A Comparative Analysis of the Polish Subtitles and Stage Version of the Musical Les Miserables

dc.abstract.en	This thesis presents a comparative analysis of two Polish translations of the musical Les Misérables: the subtitles from the 2012 film adaptation, available on HBO Max, and the stage version translated by Daniel Wyszogrodzki for the ROMA Musical Theatre. The aim of this essay is to compare both translations and highlight the differences in the techniques used for translating the same text for different purposes. The analysis was conducted based on the classification created by Krzysztof Hejwowski (2015) and focuses on culture specific items, idioms, linguistic allusions and proper names that appear in the original work. This essay shows how the type of translation affects the decisions made by the translator. It also showcases the tendency of subtitle translations to be closer to the literal meaning of the original, while the stage translation deviates from it and focuses on maintaining a similar interpretation of the work. The results of the analysis show that differences in translation are most visible in the approach to cultural elements; they are often retained in the subtitles, while in the stage version, they are replaced with appropriate equivalents from the target culture. Both translations use similar techniques for rendering idioms, but their meaning is explained much more frequently in the case of film subtitles. Polish idioms used are closer in form to the original as well. In the stage version, idioms have corresponding meanings to the original, but they change form more frequently to account for the rhythm of the songs. In both adaptations, linguistic allusions are reduced to interjections from French, including character names, and occasional colloquial stylisation.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca stanowi analizę porównawczą dwóch polskich tłumaczeń musicalu „Les Misérables” — napisów adaptacji filmowej z 2012 roku, dostępnej na platformie HBO Max oraz wersji scenicznej przygotowanej przez Daniela Wyszogrodzkiego dla Teatru Muzycznego ROMA. Celem pracy jest porównanie obydwu tłumaczeń i wykazanie różnic pomiędzy technikami przekładu tego samego tekstu, które powstały do różnych celów. Analiza została przeprowadzona na podstawie klasyfikacji Krzysztofa Hejwowskiego (2015) i obejmuje występujące w oryginale elementy kulturowe, idiomy, aluzje językowe oraz nazwy własne. Praca przedstawia, jak typ przekładu wpływa na decyzje podjęte przez tłumacza oraz ukazuje tendencje tłumaczeń napisów do bycia bliższymi dosłownego znaczenia oryginału, a tłumaczeń scenicznych do odbiegania od niego i skupiania się na podobnej interpretacji utworu. Wyniki analizy pokazują, że różnice w przekładzie są najbardziej widoczne w podejściu do elementów kulturowych — w napisach są często one zachowane, w wersji scenicznej zaś są zastępowane odpowiednimi ekwiwalentami z kultury docelowej. Oba tłumaczenia korzystają z podobnych technik do przekładu idiomów, ich znaczenie jest jednak znacznie częściej wyjaśniane, bądź użyte polskie idiomy są bliższe formą do oryginału, w przypadku napisów filmowych. W wersji scenicznej idiomy odpowiadają oryginalnemu znaczeniu, jednak częściej zmieniają formę, by zachować rytm piosenek. W obydwu adaptacjach aluzje językowe zostały sprowadzone do wtrąceń z języka francuskiego, w tym zachowaniu imion postaci, i sporadycznej stylizacji kolokwialnej.
