Pragmatic functions of regional vocabulary in Polish contemporary literature: a corpus-based approach

dc.abstract.en	The purpose of the present thesis is to study regional expressions that appear in contemporary Polish literature and determine what functions they serve in context. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the theoretical framework, namely the differences between the word dialect and regional expression, different meanings of the word “regionalism” both in English and in Polish, the concept of pragmatics and a list of possible functions of regional expressions in Polish literature. The second part is composed of the methodology and the analysis. Regional expressions from two Polish cities: Kraków and Poznań, were sourced from specialised dictionaries and searched in the Corpus of Contemporary Polish. Those found in the corpus were analysed in two ways. The quantitative analysis established their distribution and overall number of occurrences, while the qualitative one focused on the context in which each word appeared. The former revealed that such vocabulary is really rare in Polish literature and certain authors dominate others by using them really frequently. The qualitative analysis, on the other hand, revealed that if the regional expression is present in the narration, it is very often used for adding realism and creating an authentic place of action. Use of such words in dialogues serves as a tool for characterisation of literary figures and for showing their ethnicity.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza regionalizmów obecnych w polskiej literaturze współczesnej i określenie ich funkcji w oparciu o konkretne przykłady obecne w korpusie. Pierwsza część pracy ma na celu ustalenie definicji podstawowych pojęć, takich jak dialekt i regionalizm oraz wytłumaczenie różnic pomiędzy nimi w rozumieniu polskich oraz zagranicznych naukowców; w części tej zawarta jest również definicja pojęcia pragmatyki oraz lista możliwych funkcji regionalizmów w literaturze. Regionalizmy obecne w specjalistycznych słownikach z regionów Krakowa i Poznania zostały wyszukane w Korpusie Współczesnego Języka Polskiego, a te, które się w nim pojawiły, stały się podstawą do analizy ilościowej oraz jakościowej. Ta pierwsza skupiła się na liczbach i występowaniu regionalizmów; jej wyniki pokazały, że regionalizmy występują w literaturze niezwykle rzadko, a niektórzy autorzy używają ich częściej niż pozostali. Analiza jakościowa natomiast miała na celu rozpatrzenie poszczególnych przypadków użycia regionalizmów z uwzględnieniem szerszego kontekstu. Wykazała ona, że jeśli regionalizm występuje w narracji, służyć będzie kreowaniu realistycznego miejsca akcji. W dialogu takie słowa pojawiają się zwykle w celu charakteryzacji postaci oraz by zasygnalizować jej pochodzenie.
