Nowojorskie The Cloisters – muzeum historyczne i emocjonalne – między rekonstrukcją historii a doświadczeniem estetycznym

dc.abstract.en	The subject of this thesis is New York's The Cloisters Museum, which was opened in 1938. In this thesis, I present the origins and current research on the museum's history, characterize the temporal and geographical framework of its collections, and place the collection within the context of other American institutions collecting medieval art at the turn of the 20th century. I analyze The Cloisters as an institution that combines the functions of a historical museum with those of an emotional museum. On the one hand, I demonstrate how the collection strives to reconstruct the medieval cultural experience as faithfully as possible, while on the other, it fosters an atmosphere of contemplation and emotional engagement for the viewer. In this thesis, I demonstrate that The Cloisters, through its location, exhibition narrative, and the nature of its collections, exemplifies an institution where history and emotion intertwine, giving the museum a unique character among other American collections.
dc.abstract.pl	Tematem niniejszej pracy jest nowojorskie muzeum The Cloisters otwarte w 1938 roku. W pracy przedstawiam genezę powstania oraz stan badań nad historią muzeum, charakteryzuję ramy czasowe i geograficzne zgromadzonych zbiorów, umiejscawiam kolekcję na tle innych amerykańskich instytucji gromadzących sztukę średniowieczną na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Analizuję muzeum The Cloisters jako instytucję, która łączy funkcję muzeum historycznego z kategorią muzeum emocjonalnego. Z jednej strony przedstawiam jak kolekcja dąży do możliwie wiernej rekonstrukcji średniowiecznego doświadczenia kulturowego, z drugiej zaś buduje atmosferę kontemplacji i emocjonalnego zaangażowania widza. W pracy wykazuję, że The Cloisters, poprzez swoją lokalizację, narrację wystawienniczą i charakter zbiorów, stanowi przykład instytucji, w której historia i emocje przenikają się, nadając muzeum wyjątkowy charakter na tle innych kolekcji amerykańskich.
