The discourse of apologizing in the television series Modern Family

dc.abstract.en	The present M.A. thesis is concerned with the analysis of the discourse of apologizing in the first two seasons of the American television series Modern Family. The first two chapters of the thesis provide the theoretical basis for the analysis. Chapter 1 gives an overview of previous studies on apologizing, as well as studies on television discourse. The validity of fictional television discourse as an object of analysis is also discussed. Chapter 2 expounds key terms, such as discourse, genres, social practices and social structures, as well as the premises of the Mixed Game Model (MGM) introduced by Weigand (2010), and the positioning theory introduced by Harré and colleagues (Davies and Harré 1999; Harré and Van Langenhove 1999). Additionally, the generic aspects of the strategies of apologizing differentiated in the Cross-Cultural Study of Speech Act Realization Patterns (CCSARP) are considered. The strategies include taking on responsibility, providing an account/explanation, offering repair, promising of forbearance, expressing concern, expressing regret, requesting forgiveness, offering an apology (Blum-Kulka and Olshtain 1984; Olshtain 1989). The analysis conducted in Chapter 3 considers the linguistic aspects of the apologizing discourse of Modern Family apologizing through the application of the MGM’s framework of dialogue analysis, as well as the CCSARP’s apologizing strategies in their generic aspect. Chapter 4 contains an analysis of the discourse based on the premises of the positioning theory, in the context of the three social structures specific to the discourse of Modern Family: the traditional nuclear family structure, the blended family structure, and the same-sex parent family structure. The results of the analysis provide insight into the social implications of apologizing discourse for each of the three structures.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca magisterska jest poświęcona analizie dyskursu przepraszania w dwóch pierwszych sezonach amerykańskiego serialu telewizyjnego Współczesna rodzina. Dwa pierwsze rozdziały pracy zakreślają podstawy teoretyczne analizy. Rozdział pierwszy stanowi zarys poprzednich badań nad przepraszaniem oraz nad dyskursem telewizyjnym. Przeprowadzona jest także dyskusja nad zasadnością traktowania dyskursu telewizyjnego jako przedmiotu badania. Rozdział drugi objaśnia kluczowe zagadnienia, takie jak dyskurs, praktyki społeczne oraz struktury społeczne, jak również założenia modelu gry mieszanej, ang. Mixed Game Model (MGM), zaproponowanego przez Weigand (2010). Omówione są także założenia teorii pozycjonowania wprowadzonej przez Harré i współpracowników (Davies and Harré 1999; Harré and Van Langenhove 1999). Co więcej, rozpatruje się cechy gatunkowe strategii przepraszania wyróżnionych w badaniu Cross-Cultural Study of Speech Act Realization Patterns (CCSARP), t.j. następujących strategii: branie odpowiedzialności, zdawanie relacji/wytłumaczenie, propozycja naprawy, obietnica zaniechania, wyrażenie troski, wyrażenie żalu, prośba o wybaczenie, propozycja przeprosin (Blum-Kulka and Olshtain 1984; Olshtain 1989). Analiza przeprowadzona w rozdziale trzecim rozważa aspekty językowe dyskursu przepraszania w serialu Współczesna rodzina poprzez zastosowanie analizy dialogu proponowanej przez Weigand (2010), a także poprzez odwołania do cech gatunkowych strategii przepraszania wyróżnionych w badaniu CCSARP. Rozdział czwarty zawiera analizę dyskursu opartą na założeniach teorii pozycjonowania w kontekście trzech struktur społecznych właściwych dla dyskursu serialu: struktury tradycyjnej rodziny bliskiej, struktury rodziny mieszanej oraz struktury rodziny z rodzicami tej samej płci. Analiza skutkuje wnioskami na temat społecznych następstw dyskursu przepraszania w trzech badanych strukturach społecznych.
