Translation of cultural references and proper names in the series Friends – comparison of translation strategies of earlier and later seasons in subtitles and voiceover

dc.abstract.en	The aim of this thesis is a comparative analysis of the translation of cultural elements and proper names in both the subtitles and the voice-over versions from the earlier and later seasons of the television series Friends. The main issue addressed in this thesis is the identification of prevailing translation strategies in the analysed material: whether they were more source-culture oriented or adapted to the target audience. Furthermore, an attempt is made to determine whether the translator’s approach to these strategies changed over time. The thesis consists of three chapters: two theoretical and one analytical. The first chapter presents the basic concepts of audiovisual translation and its development over the years. The second chapter is dedicated to the theory of translating cultural references and proper names, including their definitions and classifications based, among others, on Krzysztof Hejwowski’s approach and strategies proposed by Jan Pedersen. In the section on proper names, definitions by Susan S. Bean and classifications by Peter Newmark and Krzysztof Hejwowski are also discussed. The third chapter provides a detailed description of the adopted methodology and an analysis of selected examples from the Polish versions of the series, followed by an interpretation of the results. This enables conclusions to be drawn regarding the translator’s preferences and the evolution of the translation strategies employed.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza porównawcza tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych oraz nazw własnych w napisach i wersji lektorskiej pojawiających się we wcześniejszych i późniejszych sezonach serialu Przyjaciele. Głównym zagadnieniem podjętym w pracy jest ustalenie, jakie strategie tłumaczeniowe przeważały w analizowanych tłumaczeniach: czy były one zorientowane na kulturę źródłową, czy na potrzeby odbiorcy docelowego. Ponadto podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy podejście tłumacza do stosowanych strategii uległo zmianie na przestrzeni lat. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów: dwóch teoretycznych i jednego analitycznego. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono podstawowe pojęcia związane z przekładem audiowizualnym oraz jego rozwój na przestrzeni lat. Drugi rozdział poświęcony został teorii przekładu elementów kulturowych i nazw własnych, ich klasyfikacji i definicjom, opartym m.in. na ujęciu Krzysztofa Hejwowskiego, oraz strategiach zaproponowanych przez Jana Pedersena. W części dotyczącej nazw własnych odwołano się również do definicji Susan S. Bean i klasyfikacji strategii zaprezentowanych przez Petera Newmarka i Krzysztofa Hejwowskiego. Trzeci rozdział pracy zawiera szczegółowy opis przyjętej metodologii oraz analizę wybranych przykładów z polskich wersji językowych serialu, a także interpretację wyników, która pozwala sformułować wnioski dotyczące preferencji tłumaczy i ewolucji stosowanych rozwiązań translatorskich.
