Proper names in 'Shadow and Bone' by Leigh Bardugo and their translation into Polish

dc.abstract.en	This master's thesis analyses the translation of proper names created for the world presented in Leigh Bardugo's novel Shadow and Bone, in Polish translation by Małgorzata Strzelec and Wojciech Szypuła. The aim of the thesis is to identify translation norms within the contemporary translation community by examining the decisions made by two translators in order to best convey the fictional world depicted in a fantasy novel. The theoretical part presents a division into translation methods, strategies, procedures and techniques. It also includes definitions and classifications of proper names. The most significant issues related to their translation are described, along with the criteria determining the choice of specific translation tools. The practical part contains an analysis of 98 examples, which are divided into five groups: geographical names, names (including surnames) and nicknames of characters, religious terms, fantasy neologisms and cultural elements. The thesis demonstrates the diversity of translation methods and procedures used in the translation of proper names in fantasy novels. The conclusions highlight the growing tendency towards the exoticisation of texts, whilst remaining closer to the original ideas with possible minor modifications, such as spelling variations. Conscious translation choices can be seen in the case of terms domesticated in the translation process. The use of techniques such as literal translation demonstrates the translators’ keen awareness of contemporary translation standards, as well as of the source text, its nuances and the elements essential to creating a comprehensive and immersive fantasy world.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca magisterska analizuje przekład nazw własnych wykreowanych na potrzeby świata przedstawionego w powieści Cień i kość autorstwa Leigh Bardugo, w tłumaczeniach Małgorzaty Strzelec i Wojciecha Szypuły. Celem pracy jest wyłonienie norm tłumaczeniowych w dzisiejszym społeczeństwie tłumaczy, poprzez zbadanie decyzji podjętych przez dwójkę tłumaczy w celu jak najlepszego przedstawienia wykreowanego świata w powieści fantastycznej. Część teoretyczna przedstawia podział na metody, strategie, procedury i techniki tłumaczeniowe. Uwzględnia również definicje i klasyfikacje nazw własnych. Opisane są tam najważniejsze problemy związane z ich przekładem oraz kryteria determinujące wybór konkretnych narzędzi translatorskich. Część praktyczna zawiera analizę 98 przykładów, które podzielono na pięć grup: nazwy geograficzne, imiona (wraz z nazwiskami) i przezwiska postaci, terminy religijne, neologizmy fantastyczne oraz elementy kulturowe. Praca ukazuje różnorodność metod i procedur przekładu stosowanych przy tłumaczeniu nazw własnych w powieści fantastycznej. Wnioski podkreślają rosnącą tendencję do egzotyzacji tekstów, pozostawanie bliżej oryginalnym pomysłom z ewentualnymi drobnymi modulacjami np. ortograficznymi. Świadome wybory translatorskie można zauważyć w przypadku terminów udomowionych w procesie przekładu. Stosowanie takich procedur jak np. dosłowne tłumaczenie wykazuje dużą świadomość tłumaczy co do współczesnych norm tłumaczeniowych oraz tekstu oryginalnego, jego niuansów, istotnych elementów do stworzenia kompleksowego i immersyjnego świata fantastycznego.
