Translating Idiomatic Expressions: A Comparative Analysis of English and Polish Voice-Over and Subtitled Versions of the Series Emily in Paris

dc.abstract.en	Audiovisual translation plays a crucial role in shaping the perception of a film or series. This thesis aims to present the translation strategies that were employed in the Polish translation of the American series Emily in Paris, available on the Netflix platform. This work presents a comparative analysis; the translation of idiomatic expressions in both the voice-over and subtitle versions was the subject of this analysis. The collected material has been divided on the basis of the structural classification of idioms (McCarthy & O’Dell, 2002). The translation strategies adopted in the series were evaluated based on the work of Baker (1992) and Zhang and Wang (2010). This work is divided into two parts: a theoretical part and an empirical part. The theoretical part encompasses two chapters. The first chapter tackles key aspects concerning audiovisual translation, subtitling, and voice-over. The second chapter addresses the concept of idioms and their classification, and presents the difficulties encountered during the translation process and translation strategies. The empirical part investigates and compares the results of an analysis of the translation strategies implemented in both the Polish voice-over and subtitle versions of the TV series Emily in Paris.
dc.abstract.pl	Tłumaczenie audiowizualne odgrywa kluczową rolę w kształtowaniu odbioru filmu lub serialu. Niniejsza praca ma na celu analizę strategii tłumaczeniowych, które zostały użyte w tłumaczeniu na język polski amerykańskiego serialu „Emily w Paryżu” udostępnionego na platformie Netflix. Praca ta ma charakter porównawczy; analizie poddano tłumaczenie wyrażeń idiomatycznych w wersji lektorskiej oraz w napisach. Zebrany materiał został podzielony na podstawie klasyfikacji strukalnej idiomów (McCarthy i O’Dell, 2002). Strategie tłumaczeniowe omawiane w tej pracy zostały przeanalizowane w oparciu o prace Baker (1992) oraz Zhang and Wang (2010). Praca ta została podzielona na dwie części: część teoretyczną i część empiryczną. Część teoretyczna składa się z dwóch rozdziałów. Pierwszy rozdział zawiera omówienia kluczowych dla tej pracy zagadnień związanych z tłumaczeniem audiowizualnym, napisami i wersją lektorską. W rozdziale drugim znajduje się omówienie pojęcia idiomu oraz jego klasyfikacji, a także przedstawione są trudności związane z tłumaczeniem wyrażeń idiomatycznych i strategie tłumaczeniowe. Część empiryczna prezentuje i porównuje wyniki analizy strategii tłumaczeniowych wykorzystywanych zarówno w polskiej wersji lektorskiej jak i napisach serialu “Emily w Paryżu”.
