From Villain to Prude: Analysis of Translation Strategies for Swear Words in Season 1 of The Boys

dc.abstract.en	This paper analyses the application of strategies for translation swear words in the series The Boys in subtitles and voiceover. It examines the effects the approach towards swear words and vocabulary choices of the translators might have on the Polish audience. The research was conducted by collecting the data from the first season of the show and assigning to each utterance of swear word the correct type and the strategy applied in its translation. The results show the dominance of softening techniques, yet accompanied by quite significant use of preservation, with voiceover being slightly more truthful to the original. Overall, the differences between subtitles and voiceover are not significant; however, the first three episodes show results contradictory to the general view. The paper also distinguishes types of swear words prevalent in each strategy. At last, the paper shows that the vocabulary used in the Polish version changed the tone of the work and in consequence the Polish audience’s perception of it.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca analizuje zastosowanie strategii tłumaczenia przekleństw w serialu The Boys w wersji z napisami oraz wersji lektorskiej. Zbadano, jaki wpływ na polską widownię mogło mieć podejście do tłumaczenia przekleństw i słownictwo dobrane przez tłumaczy. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone poprzez zebranie danych z pierwszego sezonu serialu i przypisanie każdemu pojawiającemu się przekleństwu odpowiedniego typu i strategii zastosowanej w jego tłumaczeniu. Wyniki wskazują na dominację technik prowadzących do złagodzenia dzieła, którym towarzyszy jednakże dość znaczące wykorzystanie techniki zachowujących stopień wulgarności oryginału. Rezultat wskazuje, iż to wersja lektorska okazała się być nieco wierniejsza oryginałowi. Ogólne różnice między napisami a lektorem nie są znaczące, jednak pierwsze trzy odcinki pokazują wyniki odbiegające od ogólnego poglądu. W pracy rozróżniono również rodzaje przekleństw dominujących w każdej strategii. W finalnej części, praca pokazuje, że słownictwo użyte w polskiej wersji zmieniło ton utworu, a w konsekwencji jego odbiór przez polską publiczność.
