Translation Analysis of Neologisms in The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

dc.abstract.en	This research paper examines Aleksandra Jagiełowicz’s Polish translation of neologisms present in The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson. It analyses the types of neologisms introduced, as well as their meaning and structure, and investigates the strategies employed to translate them. Moreover, the relationship between the strategies and the type of neologism, as well as between different strategies utilised to translate one neologism was examined. Furthermore, the Polish equivalents were evaluated. In order to classify the neologisms, the typology proposed by Kovalova (2024) was applied, while the chosen classification of translation techniques was the one discussed by Chesterman (1997). The research revealed that the two most commonly used translation strategies were calques and literal translation, and that there is a link between the type of a neologism and the technique chosen. It also shows which strategies might require a second one in order to be successful. Although a handful of Polish equivalents were imperfect, overall the translation was evaluated positively.

Bada rodzaje wprowadzonych neologizmów, ich znaczenie i strukturę oraz strategie zastosowane w celu ich przetłumaczenia. Ponadto poddano analizie związek między strategiami a typem neologizmu, a także między różnymi strategiami wykorzystanymi do tłumaczenia jednego neologizmu. Oceniono również polskie odpowiedniki. W celu sklasyfikowania neologizmów zastosowano typologię zaproponowaną przez Kovalovą (2024), natomiast do omówienia technik tłumaczeniowych wybrano klasyfikację Chestermana (1997). Badanie wykazało, że dwie najczęściej stosowane strategie tłumaczeniowe to kalki i tłumaczenie dosłowne oraz ujawniło związek między typem neologizmu a wybraną techniką. Pokazuje również, które strategie mogą wymagać zastosowania w parze, w celu wykonania udanego tłumaczenia. Chociaż kilka odpowiedników w polskiej wersji powieści było niedoskonałych, tłumaczenie zostało ocenione pozytywnie.
