Translating Hemingway: A Comparative Analysis of Bronislaw Zielinski’s and Kaja Gucio’s Polish Translations of the Novella The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

dc.abstract.en	The aim of this thesis is to analyse two Polish translations of Ernest Hemingway’s short story The Old Man and the Sea, produced by Bronisław Zieliński and Kaja Gucio. The first chapter focuses on defining the concepts of translation and literary translation, providing an overview of the history of translation, and discussing the main theories and methods of translation. The second chapter focuses on explaining the iceberg theory in Hemingway’s prose, identifies the challenges associated with translating it, and presents the essence and methods of translating cultural references. The third chapter analyses translations of Hemingway’s style and the cultural references present in Spanish phrases, based on the theory of formal and dynamic equivalence described by Eugenia Nida (1964), as well as on the translation methods of Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) and the translation procedures outlined by Newmark (1988). Two Polish translations, by Bronisław Zieliński and Kaia Gucio, were compared with the original (English-language) version of novella.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza dwóch polskich tłumaczeń opowiadania „Stary człowiek i morze” Ernesta Hemingwaya dokonanych przez Bronisława Zielińskiego i Kaję Gucio. Pierwszy rozdział skupia się na zdefiniowaniu pojęcia tłumaczenia i przekładu literackiego, przybliżeniu historii tłumaczeń i omówieniu głównych teorii i metod tłumaczeniowych. Drugi rozdział skupia się na wyjaśnieniu „teorii góry lodowej” w prozie Hemingwaya, określa wyzwania związane z jej tłumaczeniem oraz przedstawia istotę i metody przekładu wątków kulturowych. W trzecim rozdziale została przeprowadzona analiza tłumaczeń stylu Hemingwaya oraz nawiązań kulturowych obecnych w hiszpańskich zwrotach na podstawie teorii ekwiwalencji formalnej i dynamicznej opisanej przez Eugene’a Nidę (1964) oraz na podstawie metod tłumaczeniowych Vinay’a i Darbelneta (1995) i procedur tłumaczeniowych autorstwa Newmarka (1988). Porównane ze sobą zostały dwa polskie tłumaczenia Bronisława Zielińskiego i Kai Gucio oraz oryginalna (anglojęzyczna) wersja opowiadania.
