An Analysis of Different Techniques for Translating Wordplay in Subtitling in Selected Episodes of the TV Series Succession

dc.abstract.en	The thesis below is concerned with an analysis of translation techniques for translating wordplay in the framework of audiovisual translation. The basis of analysis consists in subtitles in selected episodes of the American television series Succession in the original version and its Polish translation. The essay is divided into a theoretical and analytical part. The theoretical part introduces the concept of audiovisual translation with particular focus on subtitling as well as the concept of wordplay and a selection of its translation techniques. The analytical part deals with an analysis of thirteen particular instances of wordplay from an individually compiled corpus, the choice being based on the frequency of occurrence of a specific type of wordplay according to the typology proposed by Dirk Delabastita (1996). The selected examples are then contrasted with its official subtitled version in Polish and commented on in regards to the techniques applied by the translator. Wordplay is a complex phenomenon and its rendering between languages is regarded as troublesome. The translation of wordplay in the audiovisual media can be especially difficult due to the linguistic and technical constraints imposed on the translator. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that depending on a specific type of wordplay and the context it is used in, the translator can decide on different solutions so as to achieve the closest degree of correspondence of reception between the source and target text.
dc.abstract.pl	Poniższa praca dotyczy analizy technik tłumaczeniowych gier słownych w przekładzie audiowizualnym. Bazę do analizy stanowią napisy w wybranych odcinkach amerykańskiego serialu telewizyjnego Sukcesja w oryginale oraz w ich polskim przekładzie. Praca podzielona jest na część teoretyczną i analityczną. Część teoretyczna skupia się na wprowadzeniu pojęć przekładu audiowizualnego z wyszczególnieniem napisów, gier słownych oraz wybranych technik tłumaczeniowych. Część analityczna pracy dotyczy analizy trzynastu konkretnych przykładów gier słownych z samodzielnie opracowanego korpusu, wybranych w oparciu o częstotliwość występowania konkretnego typu gry słownej na podstawie typologii Dirka Delabastity (1996). Przykłady są następnie skontrastowane z ich oficjalną wersją oraz tłumaczeniem i skomentowane na podstawie zastosowanych technik tłumaczeniowych. Gra słowna jest zjawiskiem złożonym i cechuje się problematycznością w tłumaczeniu. Przekład gier słownych w materiale audiowizualnym może być dodatkowo utrudniony przez ograniczenia językowe jak i techniczne narzucone tłumaczowi. Celem pracy jest ukazanie, że w zależności od konkretnego typu gry słownej jak i kontekstu jej użycia, tłumacz może zdecydować się na różne rozwiązania zamiarem uzyskania możliwie jak największej zgodności odbioru między tekstem źródłowym a docelowym.
