Nokturn w norweskim malarstwie pejzażowym przełomu XIX i XX

wieku w kontekście budowania tożsamości narodowej

This thesis aims to explore the relationship between the nocturne in Norwegian landscape painting around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and the revival of Norwegian national identity after centuries of dependency on neighboring states. The first part of the study outlines the historical and cultural context of the developments in Norwegian art during this period, and traces the major trends in Norwegian art since the time of Johan Christian Dahl, with particular emphasis on landscape painting and nocturnes. The main body of the thesis, divided into three sections, illustrates the growing interest in nocturnal scenes among Norwegian artists. This trend is examined through the works of artists from the Fleskum colony and the so-called neo-Romantics, such as Harald Sohlberg, Halfdan Egedius, and Nikolai Astrup, especially those connected with nationalist circles. This study demonstrates that depictions of local natural landscapes and phenomena characteristic of Norway, such as the midnight sun and the blue glow after sunset, helped foster a sense of national identity and contributed to the creation of new symbols of Norwegianness. It also addresses the presence of folk motifs associated with the summer solstice that accompany the bright nocturnes.
