What can Teachers do in Order to Effectively Integrate English Language Learner Immigrant Students into a new Social Environment? A Comparative Study of the UK and Poland.
| dc.abstract.en | This research study focuses on the in-classroom actions taken by teachers in order to support their non-native, immigrant students with issues of integration and language acquisition. The main objective of this study is to understand the tools and techniques used by teachers to aid their students. The teacher's self-perceptions on their teaching and whether they see themselves as advocates for their students is also a key point of this study. Semi-structured, in-depth, individual interviews were used to conduct this research as it allowed for personal, in-depth stories and anecdotes from the teacher's professional experiences, which gave insight into their tools and strategies when dealing with immigrant students. The data was collected from four different teachers (two who were Polish and two who were British), these were then analysed based on the research questions that were to be answered, compared between all of the other interviews. The results have found that the teachers in the United Kingdom had a lot more experiences as compared to the ones in Poland. However, the general ideas that they both shared were similar, the amount of time and experience is evident in the information that has been gathered from both. The potential implications of this research is to further develop teacher understanding of how to aid incoming immigrant students integrate into a new classroom environment in which they would be able to thrive and grow. In conclusion, this research begins to ask questions that would help develop a more inclusive teaching environment for both teachers and students. |
