Neologisms in Translation: Some Particular Cases in the Polish and Japanese Versions of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There'

dc.abstract.en	This study aims to reveal the translation differences between four versions of Lewis Carroll's “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There” in Polish and in Japanese. In chapter I, I define concepts necessary for the analysis: neologism, word formation, typology of newly coined words, and translation. In chapter II, I develop the idea of neology in translation and what processes are involved, as suggested by Hanna Salich in her works concerning the techniques and strategies in translation of neologisms. In chapter III, I provide sources and subject words to be further analysed. Next, I introduce the Polish versions, by Antoni Marianowicz and by Maciej Słomczyński, the Japanese versions, by Masao Kusuyama and by Akitsugi Dōmoto. Lastly, I conduct an analysis of interpretation and intention in each translation given, and compare the source language with the target languages. I conclude that there exist multiple legitimate strategies and techniques of translating neologisms, and the superiority does not belong to any of them, but rather depends on the word's formation, the differences between the source and target language, as well as each translator's own interpretation of the neologism in question.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem mojej pracy jest określenie różnic tłumaczeniowych między czterema wersjami powieści autorstwa Lewisa Carrolla, Alicja w Krainie Czarów oraz Po drugiej stronie lustra w języku polskim i japońskim. W rozdziale pierwszym wyjaśniam pojęcia niezbędne do przeprowadzenia analizy: neologizm, słowotwórstwo, typologia nowo utworzonych słów, przekład. W rozdziale drugim rozwijam pojęcie neologii w tłumaczeniu i omawiam procesy z nią związane według opracowania dr Hanny Salich na temat technik i strategii tłumaczenia neologizmów. W rozdziale trzecim wymieniam przedmioty analizy i ich źródła. Następnie przedstawiam ich przekłady polskie Antoniego Marianowicza i Macieja Słomczyńskiego oraz japońskie Masao Kusuyamy i Akitsugiego Dōmoto. Na koniec analizuję interpretację i metodę każdego podanego tłumaczenia i porównuję język źródłowy z językami docelowymi. We wnioskach stwierdzam, że istnieje wiele poprawnych strategii i technik tłumaczenia neologizmów i żadna nie powinna być uznawana za nadrzędną. Każda z nich może uzyskać przewagę w zależności od etymologii słowa, różnic między językiem źródłowym a docelowym, a także własnej interpretacji danego neologizmu przez każdego tłumacza.
