The formation of gender identity in transgender and nonbinary individuals in autobiographical memories. A linguistic analysis

dc.abstract.en	Autobiographical memory plays a crucial role in maintaining a sense of self-identity, especially during major life transitions such as coming out or transitioning in transgender and nonbinary individuals. Nourkova & Ivanova's (2017) research suggests that autobiographical memories in transgender individuals are more vivid and self-focused than in cisgender individuals, showing narratives which support individuals' self-continuity. According to Grysman et al. (2024), memories formed after coming out are of greater relevance to transgender individuals' identity. My study examines how the formation of gender identity in transgender and nonbinary individuals is reflected in their autobiographical memories, and how linguistic choices in these narratives align with gender identity. Transgender and nonbinary participants (N=25) completed an online survey, where they described memories related to their gender identity in response to three open-ended questions. Their answers were subject to thematic and linguistic analyses. The thematic analysis revealed a gradual process of gender identity formation, characterised by defining moments, in particular feelings of difference from peers, experiences of gender dysphoria and the role of media and internet. It also showed the influence of affirmation through language on this process. The linguistic analysis revealed that participants used language as a tool for self-expression and validation of their past and present identity. Many chose gender neutral or mixed grammatical forms, incorporated English and community-specific terms, and added creative linguistic forms, highlighting the individualised and dynamic experience of gender identity. These findings show how autobiographical memory and language intertwine to construct and affirm transgender and nonbinary identities. By narrating past experiences, transgender and nonbinary individuals understand their gender identity and can shape it using the language they choose.

Badanie Nourkovej i Ivanovej (2017) sugeruje, że wspomnienia autobiograficzne u osób transpłciowych są bardziej żywe i skoncentrowane na sobie w porównaniu do osób cispłciowych, ukazując narracje wspierające ciągłość tożsamości jednostki. Według Grysmana i in. (2024) wspomnienia ukształtowane po ujawnieniu się mają większe znaczenie dla tożsamości osób transpłciowych. Moje badanie sprawdza jak kształtowanie się tożsamości płciowej u osób transpłciowych i niebinarnych jest odzwierciedlone w ich wspomnieniach autobiograficznych, oraz jak wybory językowe w tych narracjach dopasowują się do tożsamości płciowej. Osoby transpłciowe i niebinarne (N=25) wypełniły internetową ankietę, w której opisały wspomnienia związane ze swoją tożsamością płciową, odpowiadając na trzy pytania otwarte. Ich odpowiedzi podlegały analizie tematycznej i językowej. Analiza tematyczna ukazała stopniowy proces kształtowania się tożsamości płciowej charakteryzujący się decydującymi momentami, w szczególności poczuciem inności od rówieśników, doświadczeniami dysforii płciowej oraz rolą mediów i internetu. Pokazała również wpływ afirmacji poprzez język na ten proces. Analiza językowa ujawniła, że osoby badane używały języka jako narzędzia do wyrażania siebie oraz potwierdzania swojej przeszłej i obecnej tożsamości. Wiele osób wybierało neutralne płciowo lub mieszane formy gramatyczne, wprowadzało angielskie i specyficzne dla społeczności terminy, oraz dodawało kreatywne formy językowe, co podkreślało indywidualny i dynamiczny charakter doświadczenia tożsamości płciowej. Wyniki te pokazują, jak pamięć autobiograficzna oraz język przeplatają się ze sobą, konstruując i potwierdzając transpłciowe i niebinarne tożsamości. Poprzez prowadzenie narracji o przeszłych doświadczeń, osoby transpłciowe i niebinarne rozumieją swoją tożsamość płciową i mogą kształtować ją za pomocą wybranego przez siebie języka.
