Evaluating the Effectiveness of Psychotherapy Skills Training Based on Clara Hill’s Helping Skills Model with Competent Judges' Assessment – Preliminary Results

Introduction: Psychotherapy skills training is essential for psychology undergraduate students to develop the necessary entry-level skills required to pursue a career as a psychologist or psychotherapist. Current training methods rely on one of the most empirically grounded training frameworks, the Helping Skills Model (Hill, 2004, 2009, 2014, 2020; Hill & O’Brien, 1999). This study examines the effectiveness of skills training, as rated by competent judges, and explores how its application may correlate with the strength of the therapeutic alliance. Method: The present study employed a quasi-experimental design in a pretest-posttest structure with 18 psychology students. The participants underwent pre-test and post-test measurements, with the 3-day psychotherapeutic skills training occurring in between. Before and after the training, students participated in videotaped role-play therapy sessions, which three competent judges evaluated in terms of the graded accuracy levels of skills in the Inforex program. The relationships between the skills and the working alliance were also investigated. Results: Results showed a significant increase in reflecting emotions (d = 0.88) and paraphrasing (d = 0.69), whereas a significant decline was observed in the practical application of closed questions (d = 1.04). In the remaining skills, there were no notable differences between the measurements. Strong negative Spearman correlations were found between the therapist’s perspective on the working alliance and skills such as questions of Socratic dialogue (r = - .61, p = .007), prompting for elaboration (r = - .56, p = .016), immediacy (𝑟 = - .52, p = .026), and paraphrasing (𝑟 = - .54, p = .022; n = 18). Discussion: The findings confirmed that psychotherapy skills training improved skills such as reflecting emotions and paraphrasing, while reducing the use of skills like closed questions. For the other skills, there were no significant differences detected, probably due to the small sample size. The correlations between specific skills and the working alliance displayed some unexpected adverse outcomes, suggesting a complex relationship that warrants further research. Taking into consideration the limitations of this study, these findings in general align with and expand upon previous research on the effectiveness of psychotherapy skills (Hill et al., 2008; Hill et al., 2015).
