Mitigation and Marginalisation: Rural environmental (In)justice in Baden-Württemberg, Germany

dc.abstract.en	Amid growing climate pressures and net-zero targets, mitigation strategies increasingly reshape rural landscapes, altering land use and livelihoods (Brown et al., 2024). As a result, rural communities may experience disproportionate impacts from climate protection efforts. This thesis contributes to the limited body of research examining this issue through a rural environmental justice lens (Brown et al., 2024). Focusing on Baden-Württemberg, Germany, it employs semi-structured interviews to explore rural communities’ experiences and perceptions of climate mitigation measures within the framework of rural environmental justice. The results highlight rurality as a distinct category in environmental justice research. Rural communities experience unique vulnerabilities, which are rooted in self-perception, socio-economic, infrastructural, and political conditions. The study also emphasises the important role of factors such as access to basic services and infrastructure in shaping rural environmental injustices.
