Style Shifting and Identity Construction: A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Joanna Kulig’s English Performance in “The Eddy”

dc.abstract.en	The aim of this thesis was to analyze the phenomenon of linguistic style shifts and identity construction in Joanna Kulig's multilingual portrayal of Maja in the television series “The Eddy”. The work focuses on the actress's use of English, French, and Polish to express emotions, build interpersonal relationships, and shape various aspects of the character's identity. The theoretical section describes selected sociolinguistic concepts concerning linguistic style, multilingualism, emotions, and the relationship between language and identity. Particular attention is paid to the theories of authors such as Allan Bell, William Labov, Dell Hymes, Aneta Pavlenko, Jean-Marc Dewaele, Mary Bucholtz, Kira Hall, and Nikolas Coupland. The practical section is based primarily on a qualitative analysis of selected scenes from “The Eddy”, with significant attention paid to speech rate, intonation, length of utterance, emotionality, linguistic register, and code-switching. The study revealed that Joanna Kulig adapts her speech style to the communication situation, the interlocutor, and the character's emotional state. The results show that each language serves an individual function. Changing linguistic style is a crucial element in the character's identity construction and reflects her social relationships, emotions, and the process of adapting to a multilingual environment.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza zjawiska zmiany stylu językowego oraz konstrukcji tożsamości w wielojęzycznej kreacji Joanny Kulig jako Mai w serialu “The Eddy”. Praca koncentruje się na sposobie, w jaki aktorka wykorzystuje język angielski, francuski oraz polski do wyrażania emocji, budowania relacji interpersonalnych oraz kreowania różnych aspektów tożsamości bohaterki. W części teoretycznej zostały opisane wybrane koncepcje socjolingwistyczne dotyczące stylu językowego, wielojęzyczności, emocji oraz relacji między językiem a tożsamością. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono teoriom takich autorów jak między innymi: Allan Bell, William Labov, Dell Hymes, Aneta Pavlenko, JeanMarc Dewaele, Mary Bucholtz, Kira Hall i Nikolas Coupland. Część praktyczna opiera się głównie na analizie jakościowej wybranych scen z serialu “The Eddy”, gdzie w dużym stopniu uwaga została skierowana na tempo mowy, intonację, długość wypowiedzi, poziom emocjonalności, rejestr językowy oraz zjawisko code-switchingu. Badanie wykazało, że Joanna Kulig dostosowuje styl mowy do sytuacji komunikacyjnej, rozmówcy oraz stanu emocjonalnego bohaterki. Wyniki pokazują, że każdy język pełni indywidualną funkcję. Zmiana stylu językowego stanowi istotny element konstrukcji tożsamości bohaterki oraz odzwierciedla jej relacje społeczne, emocje i proces adaptacji do wielojęzycznego środowiska.
