Cuss words: How swearing is used in The Big Lebowski

dc.abstract.en	The following BA thesis explores the topic of vulgar language in the 1998 film The Big Lebowski, directed by Joel Coen and written by Ethan and Joel Coen. The aim of the thesis is to present and analyse the vulgar language appearing in the dialogue of the film, in terms of what purposes it is used for, what subject matter it refers to and what effect it has on the interlocutors. The first part of the thesis is a theoretical introduction, which, based on the literature, describes the reasons for the occurrence of vulgar language in speech, the functions it fulfils and the spheres of life to which it refers. The second part is a presentation of the key scenes from the plot of The Big Lebowski and a detailed analysis of the vulgar language used in the dialogue of these scenes. The analysis shows what functions vulgar language most often fulfils and the nature of its use, and highlights how the use of vulgar language allows for deeper character building in the film.
dc.abstract.pl	Poniższa praca licencjacka zajmuje się tematyką wulgaryzmów w filmie The Big Lebowski z 1998 roku wyreżyserowanym przez Joela Coena i napisanym przez Ethana i Joela Coenów. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie oraz analiza wulgarnego języka pojawiającego się w dialogach filmu, pod kątem tego w jakich celach jest wykorzystywany, do jakiej tematyki nawiązuje oraz jaki efekt wywołuje wśród rozmówców. Pierwszą częścią pracy jest wstęp teoretyczny, który w oparciu o literaturę opisuje przyczyny występowania wulgarnego języka w mowie, funkcje jakie spełnia oraz sfery życia, do których się odwołuje. Drugą częścią jest przedstawienie kluczowych dla fabuły scen z filmu The Big Lebowski oraz szczegółowa analiza wulgarnego języka wykorzystywanego w dialogach owych scen. Przeprowadzona analiza przedstawia to jakie funkcje najczęściej spełniają wulgaryzmy oraz to jaki mają charakter, a także zwraca uwagę na to w jaki sposób wykorzystanie wulgarnego języka pozwala na głębsze budowanie charakterów postaci w filmie.
