The Challenge of Preserving Humor in Polish Subtitles of the Series “Cunk on Earth”

dc.abstract.en	This paper discusses the issues of translating humor and preserving its comedic value in the process of creating audiovisual translations. The analysis was conducted on the basis of Polish subtitles for the British mockumentary series Cunk on Earth. The hypothesis states that preserving the original meaning by using the same vocabulary as the source text is difficult and, in some cases, impossible to achieve. The issue of humor in translation was discussed both theoretically and by comparing selected passages from the original script with their Polish translation. The question of whether it is always possible to preserve the meaning and structural core of wordplay raises the question of what can be done and what strategies translators can use to solve problems related to humor in translation, especially audiovisual. The analysis shows that many aspects of translating humor can be challenging, and even minor details can jeopardize the ultimate success of the translation. Wordplay and preserving the humorous and satirical personality of the series' main character proved particularly problematic.
dc.abstract.pl	W niniejszej pracy poruszone zostały kwestie tłumaczenia humoru i zachowania jego walorów komediowych w procesie tworzenia tłumaczeń audiowizualnych. Analiza została przeprowadzona na podstawie polskich napisów do brytyjskiego serialu Cunk on Earth. Hipoteza głosi, że zachowanie oryginalnego znaczenia przy użyciu takich samych słów jak w tekście źródłowym jest trudne, a w niektórych przypadkach wręcz niemożliwe do osiągnięcia. Kwestia humoru została zarówno omówiona teoretycznie, jak i poprzez porównanie wybranych fragmentów z oryginalnego scenariusza z ich polskim tłumaczeniem. Kwestia tego, czy całkowite zachowanie znaczenia i strukturalnego rdzenia gier słownych jest zawsze możliwe, skłania do analizy i nasuwa pytanie, co można zrobić i jakie strategie mogą zastosować tłumacze, aby rozwiązać problemy związane z humorem w tłumaczeniach, w szczególności audiowizualnych. Na podstawie analizy wykazano, że wiele aspektów tłumaczenia humoru może okazać się kłopotliwych, a nawet drobne szczegóły mogą zagrozić ostatecznemu sukcesowi tłumaczenia. Szczególnie problematyczne okazały się gry słowne oraz zachowanie humorystycznej i satyrycznej osobowości głównej bohaterki serialu.
