Lost in Translation: Exploring the Impact of Cultural Differences in English-Polish Film Translation

It explores the methods used in AVT to navigate humor, local culture references, and socio-political themes, analyzing the impact of cultural differences between English-speaking countries and Poland on the translational process. It examines the three most popular AVT techniques: dubbing, voiceover, and subtitling, as well as the cross-cultural aspects of screen translation, including strategies such as omission, direct translation, defining, equivalence, and adaptation. Through examples from popular films, such as The Banshees of Inisherin and Trainspotting, the paper illustrates how translators tackle the translation of humor and local culture, often confronted with the dilemma of being loyal to the source text or adapting to the target culture. Additionally, contemporary socio-political issues, such as gender identity representation, present further challenges for translators, as seen in the translation of the animated film Nimona. By examining specific instances, this paper offers insights into the intricate process of AVT and highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity and linguistic creativity in achieving effective cross-cultural communication in film translation.

Analizuje metody stosowane w AVT do przekładu humoru, nawiązań do lokalnej kultury oraz tematów społeczno-politycznych, badając wpływ różnic kulturowych między krajami anglojęzycznymi a Polską na proces tłumaczeniowy. Rozważa trzy najpopularniejsze techniki AVT: dubbing, lektor i napisy, a także międzykulturowe aspekty tłumaczenia ekranowego, w tym strategie takie jak pominięcie, tłumaczenie bezpośrednie, definiowanie, ekwiwalencja i adaptacja. Poprzez przykłady z popularnych filmów, takich jak Duchy Inisherin i Trainspotting, praca ilustruje, jak tłumacze radzą sobie z tłumaczeniem humoru i lokalnej kultury, często stojąc przed dylematem, czy lepiej zachować wierności oryginałowi, czy dokonać adaptacji do kultury docelowej. Dodatkowo, współczesne kwestie społeczno-polityczne, takie jak reprezentacja tożsamości płciowej, stanowią dalsze wyzwania dla tłumaczy, co widać na przykładzie tłumaczenia animowanego filmu Nimona. Analizując konkretne przypadki, praca oferuje wgląd w skomplikowany proces AVT i podkreśla znaczenie wrażliwości kulturowej oraz kreatywności językowej w osiąganiu efektywnej komunikacji międzykulturowej w tłumaczeniu filmów.
