Evolution of Indo-Greek Coins (200 BCE - CE): Iconography, Metrology and Inscriptions.

dc.abstract.en	My thesis examines how Graeco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek rulers used coinage to legitimize their rule and promote cultural integration. I discuss that these coins served as a form of mass communication, with rulers changing designs, scripts, and weight standards to fit both Hellenistic and South Asian contexts. Since other sources from this period are very limited, my research relies mainly on numismatic evidence. I study the coins directly and refer to recent scholarship that uses methods of numismatics to improve on earlier, less accurate interpretations. Key evidence includes changes in royal portraits, such as moving from a general Hellenistic diadem to local symbols like the elephant scalp; the use of Greek gods on silver coins and Indian symbols like the elephant, zebu, and chakra on square bronze coins to reach different audiences. And the adoption of bilingual inscriptions, especially Greek Kharosthi, to assert authority to local communities in Gandhara. I have mainly relied on coin catalogue of numismatics.org and also some other numismatic sources listed in the thesis.
