British Aestheticism in fin de siècle Literature and Culture

dc.abstract.en	Fin de siècle has been a period of reforms and introspection for XIX century's Europe. At the time, in Great Britain emerges aestheticism - a movement highlighting the independence of beauty from moral or social norms. This master's thesis is centered around three people from the aforementioned period: Walter Pater, Oscar Wilde and Vernon Lee. The analysis of Walter Pater's writings, the reader is familiarized with the essence of aesthetes' lives was seeking aesthetic experiences. The concept of seeing art as a subjective experience, not moral values will be explored through Pater's Studies in the History of the Renaissance. The reader will also be introduced to the aesthetic motto art for art's sake, which gives art the meaning beyond moral concepts. The discussion on Oscar Wilde's The Portrait of Dorian Gray is an embodiment of aestheticism's ideas. The analysis of the book revolves around the titular Dorian Gray, who makes a pact with his portrait, which gets older instead of him. Across the text, through the division between art and ethics, Wilde explores the relation between deep immersion in aestheticism and its moral consequences. The last chapter is dedicated to Violet Paget, under the pseudonym Vernon Lee, who introduces the supernatural to aestheticism. Through aesthetic empathy Lee suggests that art can be experience not only intellectually, but also on a deep emotional level. Her works Prince Alberic and the Snake Lady, as well as A Wicked Voice underscore the influence of aesthetic and sensory experience on human's psyche. This thesis ends with conclusions derived from analysis, summarizing the impact of aestheticism on a person through the lens of given works, as well as its timeless character.
dc.abstract.pl	Fin de siècle, końcówka XIX wieku, stanowiła w europejskiej kulturze okres introspekcji i przeobrażeń. W tym czasie w Wielkiej Brytanii pojawił się estetyzm – ruch, który podkreślał niezależność sztuki, separując ją od moralnych czy społecznych ram. Ta praca magisterska skupia się na trzech postaciach tego okresu: Walterze Paterze, Oscarze Wilde oraz Vernon Lee. Przy pomocy analizy pism filozofa i krytyka Waltera Patera, czytelnik poznaje, że dla estetów prawdziwym celem życia było poszukiwanie doznań estetycznych. Dzięki „Studiom z historii renesansu” przytoczona zostanie koncepcja postrzegania sztuki przez pryzmat indywidualnych doznań, a nie narzuconych z góry moralnych wartości. Przybliżone zostanie też motto „sztuka dla sztuki” (ang. art for art’s sake), nadające sztuce znaczenie poza normami społecznymi. Rozważania na temat Oscara Wilde i książki „Portret Doriana Graya”, przedstawiają ten tekst jako ucieleśnienie idei estetyzmu. Analiza skupia się na poznaniu tytułowego Doriana Graya, który zawiera pakt z własnym portretem i pozwala starzeć mu się w zamian za niego. Wilde bada relacje między immersją w estetyzm a moralnymi konsekwencjami wynikającymi z takiej decyzji, prezentując sztukę jako rozdzielną od etyki. Ostatni rozdział skupia się na Vernon Lee, a właściwie Violet Piaget, która w estetyzmie wprowadziła elementy nadprzyrodzone. Eksplorując „estetyczną empatię” Lee sugerowała, że sztuka może być doświadczana nie tylko intelektualnie, ale też na głębokim poziomie emocjonalnym. Jej dzieła, takie jak „Prince Alberic and the Snake Lady”, a także “A Wicked Voice” podkreślają wpływ estetycznych doznań na ludzką psychikę. Praca zakończona jest konkluzjami z analiz, podsumowującymi wpływ estetyzmu na człowieka przez pryzmat omówionych prac, jak i jego ponadczasowy charakter.
