Wybrane znaki pamięci w przestrzeniach poobozowych Kulmhof

dc.abstract.en	This thesis offers a comprehensive examination of the cultural forms through which the Holocaust is rendered present in the post-camp landscapes of Chełmno and the Rzuchowski Forest. The study focuses on the diverse signs that evoke the tragic fate of nearly 200,000 victims of Kulmhof—the first German Nazi extermination camp established on the territory of occupied Poland. Particular attention is given to traditional commemorative forms such as monuments, alongside more modest material traces of memory, including relics and artefacts. The analysis also encompasses unconventional signs arising from specific commemorative actions and performative practices. The central aim of the research is to investigate how visual forms and artistic strategies shape the memory of place, and how these signs organize and inflect the posthumous landscape. Drawing on empirical and semiotic methodologies, the study interprets both the productive and receptive dimensions of commemorative sign systems. Some of these signs remain deeply rooted in the traditions of Holocaust remembrance of the 1960s—such as monuments that “struggle” against fascism—while others, despite their individual expressiveness, refer to universal symbols of Judaism. The thesis is structured into four chapters, each corresponding to a distinct historical period in which commemorative signs played a crucial role in the gradual transformation of the former camp area into the Museum—Memorial site. The findings reveal a range of commemorative modes and visual languages, many created by members of the Poznań branch of the Association of Polish Visual Artists (Polish: Związek Polskich Artystów Plastyków—Oddział Poznański). Ultimately, the thesis may also be read as a guide through the varied semiotic landscape of remembrance—from gesture, stone, and the imprint of air, to the cross and the Star of David.
dc.abstract.pl	Praca prezentuje szerokie ujęcie kulturowych form uobecniania zagłady w przestrzeniach poobozowych w Chełmnie i Lesie Rzuchowskim. Przedmiotem badań są znaki, które przywołują tragiczne losy blisko 200 tys. ofiar pierwszego niemieckiego nazistowskiego obozu zagłady Kulmhof na ziemiach okupowanej Polski. Będą to w większym stopniu tradycyjne formy upamiętniania – pomniki, w mniejszym – materialne ślady pamięci jak relikty, czy artefakty. Jeszcze w innym, niekonwencjonalne znaki związane z określonymi działaniami i praktykami komemoratywnymi. Głównym celem pracy jest zbadanie za pomocą jakich form wizualnych, a także artystycznych strategii kształtowana jest pamięć miejsca, a także jak znaki organizują i podporządkowują w określony sposób krajobraz pośmiertny. Dzięki badaniom empirycznym i semiotycznym odczytano nadawcze i odbiorcze struktury znaków. Niektóre z nich mocno osadzone są w tradycji upamiętniania zagłady z lat 60. XX w. jak pomniki „walczące” z faszyzmem, inne pomimo swej indywidualności nawiązują do uniwersalnych symboli judaizmu. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów. Każdemu z nich przyporządkowano przedział czasowy, w którym znaki odegrały znaczącą rolę w stopniowym zagospodarowywaniu i przekształcaniu terenu poobozowego w Muzeum-Miejsce Pamięci. Wyniki badań wskazują na sposoby i formy komunikacji memoratywnej, których autorami w znacznej części są członkowie Związku Polskich Artystów Plastyków – Oddział Poznański. To pewnego rodzaju przewodnik po różnorodnych znakach, od gestu, kamienia, odcisku powietrza, po krzyż, czy gwiazdę Dawida.
