Nonverbal aspects in subtitles. The case of “Wednesday”.

dc.abstract.en	The presented thesis describes issues related to audiovisual translation, focusing on its complexity and interpenetration of component elements. It distinguishes four channels of communication: verbal audio, non-verbal audio, verbal visual and non-verbal visual channels and juxtaposes them with codes of communication. Out of those, non-verbal audio and visual elements are selected and presented in the context of subtitling. Afterwards, the thesis concentrates on text-image relations including the relation of substitution, complementarity, interpretation, parallelism, and the relation of contradiction, and compares them to text-sound relations, which require a further research. The end of theoretical part discusses translation strategies. This section is then followed by methodology and analysis of a horror comedy series: “Wednesday”, which is related to previous “Addams family” productions. Examples provided in this part concern audiovisual aspects in subtitling and revolve around issues, such as: perspective and addressing, visions, location and objects, colours and creations, irony and body language, symbolism and intertextuality, and atmosphere of darkness.
dc.abstract.pl	Praca opisuje kwestie związane z tłumaczeniem audiowizualnym, koncentrując się w głównej mierze na jego kompleksowości oraz przenikaniu się składowych elementów. Rozróżniono w niej cztery kanały komunikacji obejmujące werbalno-dźwiękowe, werbalno-wizualne oraz niewerbalno-dźwiękowe i niewerbalno-wizualne aspekty, które zestawione są z kodami komunikacyjnymi. Spośród powyższych wybrano elementy niewerbalne i zaprezentowano je w kontekście badań nad napisami. Następnie praca skupia się na relacjach tekstu z obrazem, wyróżniając: relacje substytucji, komplementarności, interpretacji, paralelizmu oraz sprzeczności, a także określa związki między dźwiękiem i tekstem, który to obszar wymaga dalszych badań. Na końcu teoretycznej części omówione są strategie tłumaczeniowe. Praktyczna część przedstawia analizę serialu z gatunku horroru komediowego, pt. „Wednesday” nawiązującego do poprzednich produkcji o rodzinie Addamsów. Przykłady omówione w tej części koncentrują się na niewerbalnych kwestiach, które wpływają na tłumaczenie i odnoszą się do zagadnień takich jak: perspektywa, sposoby komunikowania się, wizje, miejsca i przedmioty, kolory, kreacje, ironia, język ciała, symbolizm, intertekstualność oraz atmosfera mroku.
