Indonesia's role in the US-China rivalry in the Indo-Pacific

This thesis examines Indonesia’s strategic navigation of the intensifying rivalry between the United States and China in the Indo-Pacific region in the 21st century. As a pivotal middle power with significant geopolitical and economic weight, Indonesia plays a unique role in managing the shifting balance of power in Asia. Positioned at the crossroads of major sea lanes and endowed with growing political influence within ASEAN, Indonesia serves as a compelling case study of how middle powers respond to great power competition. Drawing on historical analysis, foreign policy frameworks, and contemporary engagements, the study examines Indonesia’s strategic choices, including its emphasis on non-alignment, active engagement in multilateral institutions, and promotion of ASEAN centrality. Through a qualitative analysis of policy documents, speeches, and regional developments, the thesis explores how Indonesia seeks to preserve its autonomy, promote regional stability, and maintain constructive relations with both major powers. The thesis also evaluates Jakarta’s use of hedging strategies, economic diplomacy, and normative leadership to navigate pressures from both powers. Ultimately, the research highlights the opportunities and constraints faced by Indonesia as it manages its national interests amid intensifying geopolitical rivalry. The findings contribute to broader discussions on the role of middle powers in international relations and the dynamics of the Indo-Pacific regional order.
