The Portrayal of Strikes and the Victorian Working Class in Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South and the 2004 BBC Adaptation of the Novel

dc.abstract.en	This thesis examines the representation of working class and strikes as well as trade unions in Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South (1854-55) and its 2004 BBC adaptation. It situates Gaskell’s novel in the historical and socioeconomic context of Victorian Industrial England, emphasising the role of such northern industrial cities as Manchester in the rise of Chartism, trade unions, and significant labour strikes such as Preston Strike (1853-1854) and Plug Plot Riots (1842). The analysis then examines how North and South portrays working-class characters through Bessy Higgins, Nicholas Higgins, and John Boucher, as well as Gaskell’s multifaceted portrayal of industrial conflict and class relations through the strike. The thesis also investigates how 2004 BBC adaptation readdresses significant elements of the novel through acting, cinematography and visual symbolism to engage contemporary viewers with Victorian social issues. Ultimately, the thesis argues that both the novel and the adaptation present industrial conflict, class related issues, and working-class as morally complex and socially significant, using the strike as one of the key expressions for a broader structural conflict.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca analizuje obraz klasy robotniczej, strajków oraz związków zawodowych w powieści Elizabeth Gaskell Północ i Południe (1854–1855) oraz jej adaptacji telewizyjnej BBC z roku 2004. Utwór Gaskell zostaje osadzony w historycznym i społeczno-ekonomicznym kontekście wiktoriańskiej Anglii, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem roli północnych miast przemysłowych, takich jak Manchester, w rozwoju czartyzmu, ruchu związkowego oraz znaczących protestów robotniczych, m.in. strajku w Preston (1853-1854) i strajku Plug Plot (1842). Analiza koncentruje się następnie na sposobie, w jaki ta powieść przedstawia bohaterów wywodzących się z klasy robotniczej – Bessy Higgins, Nicholasa Higginsa i Johna Bouchera – oraz na wieloaspektowym ujęciu konfliktu przemysłowego i relacji klasowych poprzez motyw strajku. Praca bada również, w jaki sposób adaptacja BBC z 2004 roku reinterpretuje kluczowe elementy powieści za pomocą gry aktorskiej, rozwiązań operatorskich i symboliki wizualnej, aby zaangażować współczesnych odbiorców w problematykę społeczną epoki wiktoriańskiej. Ostatecznie dowodzi się, że zarówno powieść, jak i jej adaptacja ukazują konflikt przemysłowy, kwestie klasowe oraz klasę robotniczą jako zjawiska moralnie złożone i społecznie doniosłe, przy czym strajk stanowi jedno z kluczowych wyrażeń szerszego konfliktu społecznego.
