Papierowe RPG w świecie transmediów: Dungeons & Dragons jako przykład ekspansji uniwersum narracyjnego

The following bachelor’s thesis is dedicated to the analysis of table-top role-playing games as a medium of transmedial storytelling, using the example of the oldest and most popular game of this kind – Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), with particular emphasis on the Forgotten Realms universe. The author points out that contemporary popular culture is characterized by a strong permeation of content across different media – books, films, games – which is called convergence culture. Within this framework, transmedia storytelling gains significance, meaning stories that develop across various media platforms while maintaining the coherence of the depicted world. D&D serves as a model example for such narration. The open structure of role-playing games, based on the collaborative creation of stories by players guided by a Dungeon Master, allows not only for the adaptation of stories into other media but also for the combining of elements originating from different licensed products. In the comparative analysis, the author examined rulebooks, scenarios, novels, and computer games set in the Forgotten Realms universe, identifying recurring motifs, characters, and locations that connect various representations developed within the brand’s evolution. This bachelor’s thesis concludes that the transmediality of D&D results not only from internal brand development strategies and marketing decisions but also from inherent features of the product itself – namely, modularity, flexibility, and interactivity. The game world does not impose a single version of the story but provides a framework for countless narrative variants, making it an excellent foundation for extensive, transmedia stories. Dungeons & Dragons functions simultaneously as a game, a world, and a storytelling tool, which makes it a unique phenomenon in the culture of convergence.
