Gendered Rewritings of Myth in Pat Barker's The Silence of the Girls and Madeline Miller's The Song of Achilles

dc.abstract.en	In the recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in the interest in the novelistic retellings of classical mythology, with novels such as A Thousand Ships (2019) by Natalie Haynes or Elektra (2023) by Jennifer Saint filling bookstores around the world. The aim of this paper is to investigate this growing literary trend. In my thesis, I closely examine two of such rewritings, The Silence of the Girls (2018) by Pat Barker and The Song of Achilles (2011) by Madeline Miller. Both of these novels retell the myth of the Trojan War from the point of view of minor characters from the Iliad, the epic which inspired them. This change of perspective results in the creation of completely new stories which differ from the original narrative. In her retelling, Barker describes the situation of female slaves in the Greek camp, focusing on the physical and psychological violence these women have to endure. The focal point of Miller’s rewriting is the romantic relationship between Patroclus and Achilles, which was only suggested in the epic. Both novels take a second look at a well-established tale, reexamining and revaluating the principles behind it. They present a different vision of war, emphasising the destructive impact it has on both the individuals and the relationships between them.
dc.abstract.pl	W ciągu ostatnich lat można było zauważyć znaczny wzrost zainteresowania powieściami, które na nowo opowiadają klasyczne mity. Książki takie jak A Thousand Ships (2019) Natalie Haynes czy Elektra (2023) Jennifer Saint wypełniają półki księgarni na całym świecie. Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie tego rozwijającego się trendu literackiego. W mojej pracy szczegółowo przyglądam się dwóm z takich książek, The Silence of the Girls (2018) Pat Barker i The Song of Achilles (2011) Madeline Miller. Obie powieści opowiadają mit o wojnie trojańskiej z punktu widzenia postaci pobocznych z Iliady, poematu epickiego, który je zainspirował. Ta zmiana perspektywy zaowocowała powstaniem kompletnie nowych historii, które różnią się od tej opowiedzianej przez Homera. W swojej książce Barker opisuje sytuację niewolnic w obozie Greków, skupiając się na przemocy fizycznej i psychicznej, którą te kobiety były zmuszone znosić. Centralnym punktem powieści Miller jest romantyczna relacja pomiędzy Patroklosem i Achillesem, która jest jedynie zasugerowana w eposie Homera. Oba teksty przyglądają się dokładniej dobrze znanej opowieści, poddając ponownej analizie stojące za nią wartości i przekonania. Prezentują one inną wersję wojny, podkreślając destrukcyjny wpływ, który wywiera ona zarówno na poszczególne jednostki, jaki i na związki pomiędzy nimi.
