The application of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences in teaching primary school EFL students
The application of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences in teaching primary school EFL students
| dc.abstract.en | The Theory of Multiple Intelligences presented by Howard Gardner contradicts the traditional views of intelligence by asserting that individuals possess diverse cognitive capacities that expand beyond the known standards. The central aim of this study is to investigate the application of Gardner’s theory in practice in grades 4 to 6 of primary school (levels A1 and A2), specifically focusing on catering to linguistic and bodily-kinesthetic learners. This close focus on two types of intelligence can be done by incorporating a variety of teaching strategies and adapting them to the needs and abilities of students. Chapter 1 covers the historical background of intelligence theories, an exploration of Gardner's Multiple Intelligences theory, its evolution, and its application in education throughout the years. It also briefly describes the main eight intelligences: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic. The following didactic questions have been formulated for this study: Is Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences used in the classroom? If yes, in what way is it being used and is it effective? To answer these didactic questions, lessons in grades 4-6 will be observed and conducted, focusing on implementing the MI during the lessons. The Practical part will contain plans of the lessons that will be conducted during teaching practice internships at a primary school in Warsaw along with their aims and objectives. In addition, the students' various learning situations and learning styles will be monitored. It is predicted that the teachers will conduct the lessons mostly in the traditional form, without emphasising the aspect of MI in learning the foreign language and differentiating the needs of every pupil. |
