Beyond the textbook: The role of kinaesthetics, embodiment and gamification in foreign language grammar instruction for teenagers

dc.abstract.en	The subject of the following thesis is the role of kinaesthetics, embodiment and gamification in foreign language grammar instruction for teenagers. The thesis discusses the existing literature on the use of movement-based methods in foreign language teaching. The following chapter describes the study, which was divided into two parts. The first one involved conducting two lessons, in experimental and comparative groups, introducing the Passive Voice in the Present Simple tense. The experimental group discovered and practised the rule using physical activities and games, whereas the comparison group was presented with the rules on the board and then practised the topic the traditional way, by doing exercises from the textbook and additional materials. The second part of the study was the survey conducted among thirty foreign language teachers, which investigated their attitudes and practices regarding the use of embodied approaches and physical activities in grammar teaching. Next, the results were described and interpreted. They were compared with the literature, and conclusions were drawn regarding the research hypotheses. The limitations that influenced the study were described, and solutions to them were proposed. Further directions for research on the use of movement in grammar teaching were also proposed.
dc.abstract.pl	Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest rola kinestetyki, ruchu i gier w nauczaniu nastolatków gramatyki języka obcego. W pracy omówiono dotychczasową literaturę na temat użycia metod wykorzystujących ruch podczas nauczania języka obcego. Następnie opisano badanie, które składało się z dwóch części. Pierwsza polegała na przeprowadzeniu dwóch lekcji, w grupach eksperymentalnej i porównawczej, wprowadzających zagadnienie strony biernej w czasie Present Simple. Grupa eksperymentalna odkrywała i ćwiczyła zasady z wykorzystaniem aktywności ruchowych i gier, a grupie porównawczej zasady zostały przedstawione na tablicy, a następnie uczniowie ćwiczyli zagadnienie w tradycyjny sposób, robiąc zadania z podręcznika oraz z dodatkowych materiałów. Drugą część badania stanowiła ankieta przeprowadzona wśród trzydziestu nauczycieli języków obcych, która badała ich postawy i praktyki w zakresie stosowania aktywności ruchowych w nauczaniu gramatyki. Następnie opisano i zinterpretowano wyniki badań. Zostały one również zestawione z literaturą oraz wycią-gnięto wnioski dotyczące hipotez badawczych. Opisano ograniczenia, które wpłynęły na badanie, oraz zaproponowano dla nich rozwiązania. Zaproponowano także dalsze kierunki badań nad wykorzystaniem ruchu podczas nauczania gramatyki.
