Harnessing Citizen Science to Catalyse Clean Water and Sanitation

dc.abstract.en	This thesis investigates the potential of citizen science in contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 by enhancing water quality monitoring and public engagement. Using a mixed-methods approach, involving focus groups with practitioners, interviews with citizen science project leaders and surveys from participants and non-participants in citizen science, the study explores the motivations behind volunteer participation, the benefits for participants and the water sector, and the challenges faced by citizen science projects. Key findings indicate that citizen science can significantly increase public awareness, skills and knowledge, enhance engagement in the water sector, and foster environmental stewardship. However, the success of these initiatives depends on adequate funding, institutional support, data recognition, and effective volunteer engagement strategies. By examining volunteer motivations and barriers to participation, the research provides recommendations for enhancing the sustainability and impact of citizen science in the water sector.
