The Language of Emotions: A Comparative Analysis of the Portrayal of Emotions in Dialogues in the English, Italian, and Polish Versions of the Movie Mamma Mia!

dc.abstract.en	This paper aims to present an analysis of the verbalization of emotions in dialogues in selected language versions of the movie “Mamma mia!” and to discuss the translation techniques used in the subtitles of this film. The first chapter is devoted to the definition of translation, with particular emphasis on audiovisual translation, its evolution and the challenges specific to this type of translation. The second chapter describes issues related to ways of expressing emotions, both at the verbal and non-verbal levels. It also tackles the issue of expressing emotions in contemporary media. Furthermore, the strategies and difficulties that translators encounter in this area are also outlined. The third chapter deals with a comparative analysis of the verbal representation of emotions in Polish, English and Italian, including translation strategies. The analytical part is divided into four main categories of emotions.In some cases, there is an attempt to suggest an alternative translation that could better reflect the sense and tone of the original utterances.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca ma na celu przedstawienie analizy werbalizacji emocji w dialogach w wybranych wersjach językowych filmu “Mamma Mia!” oraz omówienie zastosowanych technik tłumaczeniowych w napisach tego filmu. Pierwszy rozdział poświęcony jest definicji tłumaczenia, ze szczególnym naciskiem na tłumaczenie audiowizualne, jego ewolucję i wyzwania charakterystyczne dla tego typu przekładu. W drugim rozdziale opisano zagadnienia związane ze sposobami wyrażania emocji, zarówno na poziomie werbalnym, jak i niewerbalnym. Poruszono też kwestię wyrażania emocji we współczesnych mediach. Przybliżono także strategie i trudności, jakie tłumacze napotykają w przekładzie zwrotów wyrażających emocje. Trzeci rozdział zajmuje się analizą porównawczą werbalnego przedstawiania emocji w polskiej, angielskiej i włoskiej wersji językowej z uwzględnieniem strategii tłumaczeniowych. Część analityczna została podzielona na cztery główne kategorie emocji. W niektórych przypadkach podjęto próbę zaproponowania alternatywnego tłumaczenia, które mogłoby lepiej oddawać sens i wydźwięk oryginalnych wypowiedzi.
