Social media advertising through visual metonymy. The case study of Bloom Nutrition advertising
Social media advertising through visual metonymy. The case study of Bloom Nutrition advertising
| dc.abstract.en | In the past few years, social media has become a popular platform for advertising various products and services, thanks to its nature that facilitates advertisers with promoting their goods in a way that easily blends in with the regular content put out by influencers and content creators. Bloom Nutrition, a health supplement company from California is one of such companies, promoted by their so-called Bloom Partners who smoothly combine the advertised product with their usual content. Whether it is a video about someone's lifestyle, an activity they keenly participate in, or a comedic meme video, there are metonymies present that highlight the advertised Bloom Nutrition product as a key element of the video's narrative. Noticing the popularity of such advertisements I decided to conduct a case study on paid promotion Bloom Nutrition videos described with a hashtag bloom partner in order to explore the different functions metonymy can serve in a social platform like TikTok to promote a company. I initially chose a set of around 50 videos that I then narrowed down to 27 that I consider to be the best examples for my thesis. I divided them into three categories; lifestyle, activity and meme videos. After analyzing all the chosen videos I came to a conclusion that various metonymies related to the advertised product are very prominently featured in the videos and they play a major role in enhancing the quality of the advertisement as well as creating a parasocial relationship between the creator and the viewer. |
