Intralingual theatre surtitling: A reception study among hearing, hard of hearing and deaf viewers in TR Warszawa

dc.abstract.en	This thesis presents a study of Polish intralingual subtitling at TR Warszawa theatre. The aim of the study was to investigate the reception of subtitling by hearing audience members and those with varying degrees of hearing loss. Chapter 1 introduces subtitling as a type of audiovisual translation, including subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing, and presents two ways of categorising subtitling. Chapter 2 focuses on semi live subtitling and its use in live performances such as theatre productions. Chapter 3 describes deaf, hard of hearing and hearing users of intralingual subtitling. It then introduces the numbers of people with hearing loss, models of deafness, the Deaf community, as well as the situation of the hard of hearing and the reasons why hearing people may want to use captioning. The analytical section that follows presents and discusses the results of the study, which indicate the need for improved captioning and increased awareness of it. The study found that subtitles in theatre are used by both hearing and hearing-impaired audience members, and that the inappropriate speed at which they are displayed, the incorrect positioning of the screen on which they are projected, and the differences between their text and that spoken by the actors negatively affect their reception. The thesis closes with a recommendation to theatres to use subtitles, but to create them thoughtfully and responsibly.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca przedstawia badanie polskich napisów wewnątrzjęzykowych w teatrze TR Warszawa. Celem pracy było zbadanie odbioru napisów przez widzów słyszących i widzów z różnym stopniem ubytku słuchu. Rozdział 1 przedstawia napisy jako rodzaj tłumaczenia audiowizualnego, w tym napisy dla osób niesłyszących i słabosłyszących, a także prezentuje dwa sposoby kategoryzacji napisów. Rozdział 2 koncentruje się na napisach semi live i ich wykorzystaniu w występach na żywo, takich jak przedstawienia teatralne. Rozdział 3 opisuje niesłyszących, słabosłyszących i słyszących użytkowników napisów wewnątrzjęzykowych. Przybliża on liczbę osób z ubytkiem słuchu, modele głuchoty, społeczność Głuchych, a także sytuację osób słabosłyszących oraz powody, dla których osoby słyszące mogą chcieć korzystać z napisów. Następująca później część analityczna przedstawia i omawia wyniki badania, które wskazują na potrzebę ulepszenia napisów i zwiększenia świadomości na ich temat. Praca dowiodła, że napisy w teatrze są używane zarówno przez widzów z niepełnosprawnością słuchu, jak i słyszących, a także że niewłaściwa prędkość ich wyświetlania, nieprawidłowe umiejscowienie ekranu, na którym są wyświetlane, oraz różnice w ich tekście a tym, wypowiadanym przez aktorów, wpływają negatywnie na ich odbiór. Pracę zamyka rekomendacja dla teatrów do korzystania z napisów, ale tworzenia ich w sposób przemyślany i odpowiedzialny.
