Living in a Replicated World: Deconstructing Contemporary Nostalgia for the Victorian Era Based on Zygmunt Bauman’s Concept of Retrotopia

dc.abstract.en	This thesis examines the ongoing fascination with the Victorian era in contemporary culture, using Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of retrotopia as a starting point. Bauman describes a tendency in late modern societies to look backwards rather than forwards, turning to idealised versions of the past in response to present-day uncertainty. This framework helps to understand how and why the Victorian era has become a powerful site of nostalgia, fantasy, and cultural performance. I focus on two case studies: Sarah A. Chrisman, who recreates Victorian life as a form of personal lifestyle reenactment, and Ruth Goodman, who engages with the period through professional historical reconstructions in reality television. Both of the cases display how reenactment can either reinforce or criticise dominant narratives. However, issues of race and empire remain largely absent in both approaches. By exploring how the past is selectively remembered and reconstructed, the thesis argues that Neo-Victorianism is not just about aesthetic revival but reflects more profound cultural anxieties. It shows how nostalgia for the Victorian era operates as a response to modern disillusionment, shaped by the desire for order, meaning, and imagined stability.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca bada niesłabnącą fascynację współczesnej kultury dla epoki wiktoriańskiej wychodząc od koncepcji „retrotopii” Zygmunta Baumana. Bauman opisuje skłonność społeczeństw doby późnej nowoczesności do spoglądania wstecz, w stronę wyidealizowanych wersji przeszłości, aby uciec od poczucia niepewności dnia dzisiejszego. Ta podstawa teoretyczna pozwala zrozumieć w jaki sposób i dlaczego wiktorianizm stał się potężnym obszarem nostalgii, fantazji i performatywności kulturowej. W swojej analizie skupiam się na dwóch przykładach: Sarah A. Chrisman, która odtwarza wiktoriańskie życie codzienne jako formę osobistego performansu oraz Ruth Goodman, zawodowej historyczki i telewizyjnej ekspertki od rekonstrukcji historycznych. Oba te przypadki pokazują w jaki sposób odtwarzanie historii może służyć jako wzmocnienie bądź krytyka dominujących narracji społecznych – chociaż na przykład kwestie rasy czy imperializmu nie pojawiają się w nich. Analizując sposoby, w jakie przeszłość jest selektywnie pamiętana i odgrywana, niniejsza praca dowodzi, że neowiktorianizm jest nie tylko kwestią estetyki, ale również zaangażowania w głębsze problemy kulturowe, a nostalgia za epoką wiktoriańską staje się odpowiedzią na rozczarowanie współczesnością ukształtowane przez pragnienie porządku, sensu i wyobrażonej stabilności.
