Fotografia bez aparatu. Genealogia i rola rayografii w twórczości Man Raya
| dc.abstract.en | This thesis examines the genealogy and role of the rayograph in Man Ray’s artistic practice. The rayograph is a term for Man Ray’s version of the photogram, an image produced by placing objects directly onto light-sensitive paper and exposing them to light, without the use of a camera. The photogram is one of the oldest photographic techniques and one of the most significant objects of modern photographic theory. The central research question concerns whether the rayograph constitutes an original technical discovery or rather a conscious artistic gesture towards a long-established technique, and what role it played within Dadaism, Surrealism, and photographic theory. The thesis argues that rayography was neither a one-time discovery nor an illustration of a pre-existing artistic programme, but the result of Man Ray’s years-long search for an image made without the hand of the artist, one based on controlled chance and the estrangement of the object. The study employs a historical-analytical method, combining a reconstruction of the photogram’s genealogy from historical sources with an analysis of selected works and texts in the context of photographic and avant-garde theory. The research shows that the photogram was a technique present from the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in the work of Wedgwood, Niépce, and Talbot, and that its return in the avant-garde of the 1920s responded to a crisis of artistic expression that gave rise to Dadaism and Surrealism. The thesis shows that Man Ray had been searching for an image made without the artist’s hand long before 1922, as evidenced by his airbrush paintings, his 1921 correspondence, and his experiments with clichés-verre. An analysis of the rayograph through Rosalind Krauss’s category of indexicality reveals that it constitutes photography in its most radical form: a trace of physical contact with reality that is simultaneously indexically grounded and semiotically uncanny. The thesis also examines the logic of rayography beyond the static photograph: in film, advertising, and solarisation. The findings suggest that the rayograph was not so much a discovery as an artistic reinterpretation of an existing technique. Man Ray did not illustrate the programmes of Dadaism or Surrealism; rather, he preceded them with his own practice, working with the avant-garde rather than for it. |
| dc.abstract.pl | Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie genealogii i roli rayografii w twórczości Man Raya. Ta metoda należy do najstarszych technik fotograficznych i zarazem do najbardziej istotnych zagadnień nowoczesnej teorii obrazu. Man Ray pragnął ograniczyć udział ręki artysty i tworzyć korzystając z kontrolowanego przypadku i wyobcowania przedmiotu. W badaniach zastosowano metodę historyczno-analityczną, łącząc rekonstrukcję genealogii fotogramu ze źródeł historycznych z analizą wybranych dzieł i tekstów w kontekście teorii fotografii i teorii awangardy. Man Ray nie ilustrował programów dadaizmu ani surrealizmu, lecz wyprzedzał je własną praktyką, będąc samemu „strażą przednią”(„avantgarde”). |
