“My children could benefit more from my knowledge”. Reflections of Polish Women on Integrating Motherhood and the Psychotherapeutic Profession

Qualitative research examining the perspectives of Polish women on their motherhood and work as professional psychotherapists. Using a semi-structured approach, twelve participants were interviewed to explore their feelings and reflections about being in the role of mother and psychotherapist, the influence of the roles on each other, how they navigate between them, and their positive and negative aspects, as well as various expectations following them. Participants revealed that they no longer separate their roles. They found great value in having resources from both of them and being able to support themselves, their children, and patients. Participants also shared how their knowledge and skills impact their children. Furthermore, they described how they manage social expectations and their own pressure related to being a perfect mother. Lastly, participants reflected on various sources of feelings of guilt, considering the cultural archetype of the Polish Mother and work-family conflict.
Ponadto uczestniczki opisywały strategie radzenia sobie z normami społecznymi i wewnętrzną presją związaną z dążeniem do bycia “idealną matką”.
