Ślady tradycji romantycznej w filmach Todda Phillipsa „Joker” (2019) i „Joker: Folie à deux” (2024)

dc.abstract.en	The objective of this thesis is to examine the presence of Romantic tradition in Todd Phillips’ films Joker and Joker: Folie à Deux. The analysis contrasts selected narrative threads and character construction techniques from these postmodern films with motifs and themes characteristic of pre-Romantic and Romantic literature. Particular attention is devoted to the protagonist’s transformation, the representation of suffering and violence, as well as notions of revolution and love. The first chapter outlines the rationale behind identifying intertextual connections between Phillips’ contemporary cinematic work and literary traditions of the early 19th century. The second chapter explores the motif of the protagonist’s transformation and its implications for character dynamics in a postmodern context. Chapter three draws a parallel between Arthur Fleck and the archetype of the Byronic hero—figures defined by inner torment and a proclivity for administering justice in accordance with their personal moral codes.The portrayal of revolution is analyzed separately, with particular reference to Seweryn Goszczyński’s Zamek kaniowski and the broader Romantic ideal of rebellion. The final chapter investigates Arthur’s conceptualization of love, juxtaposed with the Romantic notions of love as presented in Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther and Mickiewicz’s Giaur.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem pracy jest zwrócenie uwagi na ślady obecności tradycji romantycznej w filmach Joker i Joker Folie à deux w reżyserii Todda Phillipsa. W rozprawie skontrastowano niektóre wątki fabularne, a także sposobów kreacji bohatera w postmodernistycznym filmie z literaturą preromantyczną i romantyczną. Pod uwagę wzięto zagadnienie przemiany bohatera, sposób przedstawiania cierpienia i przemocy, rewolucji oraz miłości. Pierwszy rozdział tłumaczy powód zauważenia w najnowszej twórczości Todda Phillipsa podobieństwa do literatury I połowy XIX wieku. Drugi wprowadza w zagadnienie przemiany bohatera i jego wpływu na nową dynamikę postaci. W trzecim rozdziale pojawia się porównanie Arthura Flecka do bohaterów bajronicznych, naznaczonych przez doświadczenie cierpienia i wymierzających sprawiedliwość przemocą zgodnie z osobistym kodeksem moralnym. Osobno zostaje przybliżone obrazowanie rewolucji, ukazane w kontekście Zamku kaniowskiego Seweryna Goszczyńskiego oraz idei buntu. Ostatni rozdział jest poświęcony pojmowaniu miłości przez Arthura, które zostało skonfrontowane z ukazaniem miłości romantycznej w Cierpieniach młodego Wertera Goethego i Giaurze Adama Mickiewicza.
