The characteristics of EEG signal in Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR)

dc.abstract.en	In this thesis I present the results of a pilot study I designed on the effects of ASMR on the EEG signal. Previous research is inconclusive on how exactly engaging with ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) content online affects the brain. The ASMR itself is a feeling of tingling sensations, usually felt around the scalp and the neck accompanied by general relaxation and which is elicited by various sensory stimuli. Results of some of them were even mutually exclusive. In this paper, I provide detailed explanation on what ASMR is exactly, where did that acronym come from and what is the current theory on the origin of this phenomenon. A thorough analysis of the literature that has emerged on ASMR is also included. Furthermore, I present a new approach to the ASMR research, which focuses on the fact that ASMR is an idiosyncratic phenomenon. Moreover, I provide a detailed description of the study, as well as evaluate the results of the pilot study, which I have conducted. Additionally, I propose what could have been done better during the research, what were the limitations of it and what should be done in the future in order to obtain better and more detailed data. I believe that if the study were to be fully conducted, it can provide an important insight on the, still not fully researched, topic of ASMR.
dc.abstract.pl	W mojej pracy przedstawiam wyniki zaprojektowanego przeze mnie badania pilotażowego, dotyczącego wpływu ASMR (z ang. Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) na sygnał EEG. ASMR jest zjawiskiem uczucia przyjemnego mrowienia, występującego najczęściej na skórze głowy i karku, któremu towarzyszy uczucie relaksacji i które jest wywoływane przez niektóre bodźce wzrokowe, słuchowe lub dotykowe. Dotychczasowe badania prezentowały niejednoznaczne rezultaty co do tego, jak dokładnie oglądanie treści ASMR wpływa na mózg. Co więcej, niektóre wyniki były nawet wzajemnie się 2 wykluczające. W niniejszym tekście opisałem czym dokładnie jest ASMR, skąd wziął się ten akronim i co on oznacza, jaka jest aktualna teoria wyjaśniająca pochodzenie tego zjawiska i jak zyskuje na popularności w ostatnich latach. W dalszym fragmencie zawarłem dokładną analizę literatury, która powstała na temat ASMR. W pracy przedstawiam również moje podejście do badania ASMR, które bazuje na założeniu, że jest ono zjawiskiem idiosynkratycznym. Zamieściłem szczegółowy opis, a także wyniki przeprowadzonego przeze mnie badania pilotażowego, które zostały szczegółowo przeanalizowane. Dodatkowo, zaproponowałem co można było zrobić lepiej w badaniu, jakie były ograniczenia, a także co należy zrobić w przyszłości, aby osiągnąć bardziej znaczące rezultaty. Jako że badanie jest pilotażem, nie można w pełni mówić o pełnej istotności wyników, jednakże, jeśli miałoby zostać przeprowadzone na większą skalę, jestem przekonany, że może stanowić krok naprzód w celu lepszego zrozumienia działania ASMR, a zaproponowane narzędzia będą wartościowe w projektowaniu przyszłych badań.
