A corpus study of terminological variation in conference interpreting in the Polish-English language combination at the European Parliament

dc.abstract.en	This thesis is devoted to a comparative analysis of the interpretation of terminology in the Polish-English language combination in conference interpreting provided at the European Parliament, with a special focus on the terminological variants of single-word terms, multi-word terms and proper names. The thesis consists of a theoretical section, in which a catalogue of studies on institutional discourse was presented, especially the characteristics of the European Parliament discourse, and a practical part encompassing an analysis of the interpretation of terminology in selected speeches from the European Parliament. First, a literature overview of the research on conference interpreting was outlined, in particular challenges in interpreting, norms, and strategies employed by the interpreters. Then, the discussion followed to some aspects of terminology, including term formation in accordance with the multilingualism policy of the EU, standardization, as well as equivalence and adequacy in interpreting. Subsequently, the subject of terminological variants in conference interpreting was investigated, for it was deemed as characteristic of the study material. The practical chapter of this thesis includes a comparative analysis of the interpretations in the Polish-English language combination of the fragments of speeches provided at the EP meetings and collected in the PINC corpus. The interpretations of individual terms were compared with the equivalents confirmed in the European Union term base IATE. The general analysis included some possible differences in using strategies and the number of interpretation variants depending on the direction of interpreting and specificity of both target languages. Next, selected terms and their interpretations were grouped and analyzed in respect of their adequacy in the context of use, which facilitated identifying interpretation strategies and providing some possible explanations of the observed interpretation decisions. The analysis showed a tendency for terminological variants to occur frequently in both interpretation directions and highlighted the preference of similar interpretation strategies employed by interpreters working into both languages. Moreover, it indicated the need to assess the adequacy of the interpretation of terminology in a broader context of the ST.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca jest poświęcona analizie porównawczej przekładu terminologii w tłumaczeniu ustnym konferencyjnym w Parlamencie Europejskim w kombinacji językowej polski-angielski, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wariantów terminologicznych w przekładzie terminów jednowyrazowych, wielowyrazowych oraz nazw własnych. Praca składa się z części teoretycznej, w której przedstawiono szereg badań nad dyskursem instytucjonalnym, koncentrując się na specyfice dyskursu w Parlamencie Europejskim, oraz praktycznej stanowiącej analizę tłumaczenia ustnego terminów w wybranych przemówieniach z Parlamentu Europejskiego. Początkowo zaprezentowano przegląd literatury traktującej o tłumaczeniu ustnym konferencyjnym, w tym o problemach tłumaczeniowych, normach i strategiach stosowanych przez tłumaczy. Dalsza dyskusja obejmuje zagadnienia związane z terminologią, tworzeniem terminów w myśl unijnej zasady wielojęzyczności, standaryzacją oraz ekwiwalencją i adekwatnością w tłumaczeniu ustnym. Następnie podjęto temat wariantów terminologicznych w kontekście tłumaczenia ustnego konferencyjnego z uwagi na to, że owe elementy są charakterystyczne dla materiału omawianego w dalszej części pacy. Rozdział praktyczny obejmuje analizę porównawczą tłumaczeń w kombinacji językowej polski-angielski fragmentów przemówień z Parlamentu Europejskiego zebranych w korpusie językowym PINC. Tłumaczenia poszczególnych terminów porównano z ekwiwalentami zaakceptowanymi w bazie terminologicznej Unii Europejskiej IATE. Ogólna analiza objęła możliwe różnice w stosowaniu strategii i liczbie wariantów tłumaczeniowych w zależności od kierunku tłumaczenia oraz specyfiki obu języków docelowych. Następnie wybrane terminy i ich tłumaczenia pogrupowano oraz przeanalizowano pod kątem adekwatności w szerszym kontekście ich występowania w celu identyfikacji strategii tłumaczeniowych i uzasadnienia podjętych decyzji tłumaczeniowych. Analiza ujawniła tendencję do częstego stosowania wariantów terminologicznych w obu kierunkach przekładu ustnego oraz wskazała na preferencje użycia podobnych strategii tłumaczeniowych niezależnie od kierunku tłumaczenia. Ponadto udowodniono potrzebę osadzenia oceny adekwatności tłumaczenia ustnego terminów w szerszym kontekście ich występowania w wypowiedzi.
