Political Shifts and the Anti-Immigration Sentiment in France and Germany

With the rising political polarization, the anti-immigration sentiment and its determinants also have become a topic of growing relevance. The aim of this study is to analyse the contexts of France and Germany and use data to identify predictors of the anti-immigration sentiment and to compare them over the last decade. This study draws on existing theories of the anti- immigration sentiment and their empirical proof to explain the statistical evidence. Using data from the European Social Survey (2014-2024), statistical interpretation and linear regression models are employed to examine the relationship between sentiments towards immigration and independent variables such as political orientation, education, age, among others. Results show that political orientation is in fact one of the strongest factors in predicting sentiments towards immigration in both countries, and that its effect has grown over the last decade.
