Rewolucja w XXI wieku: teoria z i dla ruchów społecznych

This thesis examines theories of revolution in the 21st century. The analysis encompasses scholarly texts published in Journal of Historical Sociology and a podcast recorded by activist Roger Hallam, which are treated as equivalent bodies of knowledge. Comparing theory emerging from two different contexts—the movement and the university—is used to address questions about what revolution might be like and what a theory of revolution might be in the 21st century, particularly after the events of the Arab Spring. The thesis highlights the surprising absence of social revolution among observed phenomena, the related weaknesses in theorizing revolution-as-change, and the ethical stance of researchers. The thesis also discusses existing research on knowledge production in social movements. An analysis of Hallam's podcast reveals that the concepts of mid-level design, nonviolence, and sociability are central to his theory. He concludes that university researchers can draw inspiration from the theory developed in social movements, placing greater emphasis on the agency of their activists, the narrative role of theory, and critical reflection on the realities that constitute them, and diagnoses that social revolution in the 21st century is still possible.
