Egiptomania w literaturze grozy przełomu XIX i XX wieku jako inspiracja intertekstualnej gry z orientalizmem

This thesis examines the phenomenon of egyptomania and its influence on horror literature. It outlines the history of the West's fascination with Egypt and explores the reasons why the ancient civilization came to occupy a place in the European imagination as a source of magic and wisdom. The thesis also highlights the role of esoteric circles in shaping the European reception of Egypt and their contribution to the development of gothic fiction at the turn of the twentieth century. Based on an analysis of three literary works from that period, it identifies and defines the egyptian gothic subgenre. Works belonging to this tradition focus on mummies, immortality, and the secret powers of the ancient Egyptians, and their analysis is situated within the framework of Edward W. Said's Orientalism. The thesis also discusses the author's short story The empty sarcophagus, which engages in dialogue with the works of classic horror writers. The story plays with established conventions and challenges the Eurocentric approach to Egyptian culture. The empty sarcophagus deconstructs motifs characteristic of horror literature and demonstrates that fascination with antiquity continues to shape contemporary fiction.
