Metaphors in football journalism on the example of Alasdair Gold's and Dan Kilpatrick's articles

Football journalists employ a variety of methods to create a sense of interest among their readers. One such method is the utilisation of conceptual metaphors. The thesis is devoted to the analysis of such metaphorical expressions identified in the articles of two British journalists, Alasdair Gold and Dan Kilpatrick, both working for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, on the basis of Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory (1980). The objectives of the study are to establish the frequency with which conceptual metaphors are employed by the two correspondents, to determine which target and source domains of metaphors in question appear most commonly in the discourses of both journalists, to identify the types of conceptual metaphor used by them, to establish the contexts in which they are employed, to determine the possible functions served by the metaphors, and to distinguish any similarities and differences in the use of conceptual metaphors between the two journalists. The subject of the research are 16 publications, 8 of which were written by Alasdair Gold, and the following 8 were authored by Dan Kilpatrick. The articles and metaphorical expressions were analysed individually. Initially, the texts were read thoroughly to identify the conceptual metaphors employed. Subsequently, the metaphorical expressions were categorised, grouped according to their target domain, and examined qualitatively as well as quantitatively. A total of 118 metaphorical expressions were found, with 56 occurring in Gold’s articles and 62 in Kilpatrick’s. In the publications of both correspondents, three types of conceptual metaphors were identified: structural, ontological, and orientational. The concepts of ‘football’ and ‘football player’ were the most frequently employed target domains of conceptual metaphors in the articles of the two journalists. In contrast, no source domain can be identified as the most common in the discourses of both Alasdair Gold and Dan Kilpatrick. The conceptual metaphors were employed in a variety of contexts; for instance, in relation to player injuries, the recent Spurs match results, or the arrival of new players at the club. As for the primary function, the utilisation of such expressions serves to capture the interest of the readers, presenting the content of the articles in a more entertaining manner. Finally, numerous similarities and differences were detected in the employment of such metaphorical expressions between the two journalists.
Artykuły i wyrażenia metaforyczne zostały przeanalizowane indywidualnie. Zostało znalezionych 118 wyrażeń metaforycznych, 56 w artykułach Golda i 62 w publikacjach Kilpatricka. Trzy rodzaje metafor konceptualnych zostało zidentyfikowanych w publikacjach obu dziennikarzy: strukturalne, ontologiczne i orientacyjne. Najczęściej używane domeny docelowe metafor konceptualnych w artykułach tych dwóch korespondentów to „piłka nożna” i „piłkarz”, natomiast nie można zidentyfikować żadnej dominującej domeny źródłowej w dyskursach Alasdaira Golda i Dana Kilpatricka.
