Translating Multilingualism in the Second Polish Republic: English Subtitles for German and Yiddish Dialogue in the Polish TV Series The King of Warsaw

dc.abstract.en	The aim of this thesis is to examine the translation of multilingual elements characteristic of the sociolinguistic context of the Second Polish Republic—specifically, the use of Yiddish and German—in the English subtitles of the television series The King of Warsaw. The first chapter discusses the concept of multilingualism, both on an individual and societal level, and outlines the historical and linguistic background of the Second Polish Republic. The second chapter addresses the issue of translating multilingualism within the framework of audiovisual translation, with particular emphasis on the specific constraints and conventions of subtitling. Chapter three provides an overview of the series and presents a detailed analysis of selected dialogue segments originally delivered in languages other than Polish. The analysis of Yiddish is further refined through four thematic subcategories: social context, emotional expression, personal names, and loanwords. The findings reveal that the overwhelming majority of multilingual elements have not been reflected in the English subtitles as a result of the translation strategies employed. It was also observed that greater effort was made to render the influence of the German language, whereas Yiddish, aside from two isolated instances, was almost entirely omitted in the English version. This has led to a significant impoverishment of the series’ linguistic layer, a weakening of its internal coherence, and a diminished ability for viewers to fully understand and engage with the characters’ cultural and linguistic identities.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie przekładu elementów wielojęzyczności charakterystycznej dla realiów II Rzeczypospolitej tj. języka jidysz i niemieckiego, w angielskich napisach do serialu “Król”. W pierwszym rozdziale omówiono pojęcie wielojęzyczności, zarówno na poziomie indywidualnym, jak i społecznym, a następnie przedstawione tło społeczno-językowe II Rzeczypospolitej. Drugi rozdział poświęcono zagadnieniu tłumaczenia wielojęzyczności w kontekście przekładu audiowizualnego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem specyfiki napisów. Rozdział trzeci zawiera opis serialu oraz szczegółową analizę tłumaczenia fragmentów dialogów prowadzonych w językach obcych. W przypadku języka jidysz analiza została pogłębiona poprzez wyróżnienie czterech kategorii: kontekstu społecznego, emocjonalnego, imion oraz zapożyczeń. Analiza wykazała, że w wyniku przyjętych rozwiązań tłumaczeniowych zdecydowana większość elementów wielojęzycznych nie została odzwierciedlona w angielskich napisach. Zauważono również, że częściej podejmowano próby oddania wpływu języka niemieckiego, podczas gdy język jidysz, poza dwoma wyjątkami, został w angielskiej wersji praktycznie całkowicie pominięty. Skutkuje to zubożeniem warstwy językowej oraz osłabieniem spójności serialu, a także utrudnia widzom zrozumienie i identyfikację tożsamości poszczególnych bohaterów.
