US trade policy towards developing countries: the Vietnam case
US trade policy towards developing countries: the Vietnam case
| dc.abstract.en | This thesis analyzes the strategic evolution of U.S. trade policy towards developing countries through an in-depth case study of Vietnam. In the context of shifting global supply chains and intensifying U.S.–China rivalry, Vietnam has emerged as a key partner in American efforts to enhance economic resilience, promote regional stability, and sustain technological leadership in the Indo-Pacific. Chapter 1 outlines the historical development and strategic priorities of U.S. trade policy, particularly in relation to developing economies. Chapter 2 focuses on Vietnam’s economic ascent, its integration into frameworks like the CPTPP, and the growing significance of U.S. investment in high-value sectors such as electronics and semiconductors. Chapter 3 examines political and economic frictions, compares Vietnam’s strategic value to that of China, and explores future pathways for cooperation in digital infrastructure, sustainability, and multilateral diplomacy. Rather than emphasizing Vietnam’s internal reforms or microeconomic data, the thesis prioritizes a macro-level assessment grounded in academic literature, government reports, and policy analyses. It concludes that Vietnam’s increasing alignment with U.S. trade and regulatory norms positions it as a pivotal actor in shaping a rules-based and multipolar IndoPacific. Sustained cooperation in areas such as digital governance, environmental sustainability, and multilateral engagement will be critical to reinforcing U.S. strategic influence in the region. |
